Just an aside, but do I take it that this update will not make my 'non-dock' iPod compatible with the new Apple Codec? Why?

Surely there's not THAT much difference inside the iPod?

And there was me being proud to be an early adopter, not suffering from battery or volume problems associated with the newer generations, and now it would seem that the Lossless Encoding is something I won't be enjoying???

Hmm....

I think the newer iPods have faster processors, letting them play back the more advanced codec.

I'm guessing that the average user has no interest in these (relatively) giant files being on their iPod. They are great for half-size archival and for sending full quality via the web.
