Is there *any* benefit with this upgrade if you are not using an Apple airport base station? I have a couple of iMacs and an iBook with a mix of Airport and Airport Extreme cards, but my base station is a third-party wireless router (802.11b). What will upgrading the airport software do for me?

The least it will do is to save you clicking the quit button next time Software Update tries to install it.
I also have a non-Apple base station and the range of my Titanium-shielded G4 PB seems to have improved a bit.
