One huge weakness of Safari is that it is highly limited in doing AutoFills, and it would be great if this program increased the level of functionality to at least reach the level of Explorer.
On IE 5.2, I can add anything and everything I want to my Autofill list and as soon as I type the first few letters or numbers in any field, it will autofill the information.
This is incredibly useful and I use it dozens of times each day. For example, every time I register for a new web site - I can choose which Username of the three usernames I have I will use for that site. Similarly, I can choose which email address to provide (giving my main email for key sites, and using a more public email for non-key sites that might later spam me).
By contrast, Safari only lets you put one email address into autofill via the Address Book, and you have to manually type any other addresses you may want to use.
Same goes for credit cards. I have 2 credit cards, and all I have to do is remember the first couple of numbers, and IE will autofill the rest of the information for me. I even use this when I'm the phone placing orders with company. Instead of having to get up and get my wallet and pull out the credit card... I type the first two numbers into any field and have all my info in front of me. And I don't have to put the credit card away, and return it to where I keep it.
It's also highly useful when I login to my three yahoo email addresses - with 2 keystrokes it will autofill the yahoo ID for the address I want to access. Again, Safari won't do this.
All told, I use the autofill feature on IE dozens of times a day and save sizeable amounts of time.
Another limitation of the Safari auto-fill is that you have to move your hands to your mouse, to go up and click on the autofill button, even when you're just trying to autofill 1 or 2 fields. With IEs way of doing it, I would just type in the first couple letters and be finished with it without taking my hands off the keyboard.
The final thing I'll add is that Safari's system for "remembering" usernames and passwords for sites you visit is also limited - in that it lets you do it for some sites and not for others. And since Safari doesn't let you create your own autofill words and numbers, and doesn't autofill via typing (only via using the mouse to click the autofill button), you have to type in the username yourself for al of those sites.
I think Apple is taking a huge risk with all of us users by virtue of the fact there is not a single browser in the Mac World which has strong and wide-ranging functionality. IE has a lot of good features and functionality, but is no longer in development by MS and runs really slow. Safari has added some new functionality, and is faster, but lacks a lot of the features and functionality that was standard in IE, and most customer support centers you call into haven't even heard of it. I've found Mozilla to be limited.
I spend most of my computer time on the web, and think this is the case with most people these days, and if Apple is unable to give us quality ways of interacting with the web that are comprable to PCs, it's going to cause a lot of us to go elsewhere. And I've used Macs consistently since 1986 except a couple hours here and there that I absolutely had to use PCs. If the thing I spend the bulk of my time on, the Internet, is not compatible with Macs, it won't really leave me a choice.

The problem is not Safari... - Soul of Wit
Apple needs to improve the help for Safari. Shame on Apple for making autofill this obtuse. Autofill works fine, if you know the secret. The secret is to look at the help for Address Book.Specifically, look at the topics "Setting up your identity card", "Editing an address card", and, most importantly, "Changing the format of your address cards". The latter leads you to:
1. Edit your "my card" (AKA "identity card") in Address Book.
2. Click on a new field label and select "custom".
3. Voila! Any field you want.
4. I believe any field but Name can be duplicated.

You are correct, autofill for Safari is not setup by trying to use explorers instructions, ThanksFriday, January 28 2005 @ 12:12 AM PST

I agree. I think explorer is the top of the heap when autofill is needed in a page (or wanted). For me it reduces errors. I use a laptop and the I can never get numbers typed in right so I have to look but the laptop always is used in a dim area. If i type a credit card and they don, t have dashes or spaces, I have to check it a few to many times to see if the 16 numbers are correct or enough. In fact without explorers autofill, some sites I will try to avoid. Explorer and icab sure crash a lot though, but icab on quit so who cares. Explorer gives little hints before crashing to. Usually when I am loading to many pages at once and closing and so on.Reply to This
