While Butler has a lot of nice features (not the least of which is its price), I'm not yet convinced it is a replacement for LaunchBar. For me, there are 2 shortcomings in Butler that will keep me using LaunchBar for the time being: (1) LaunchBar's abbreviation resolution seems more accurate than Butler's: I get fewer "false positives" with LB, while Butler sometimes doesn't find the file at all; (2) I cannot seem to get Butler to use abbreviations to locate and launch documents. It works OK for applications, e-mail addresses, etc., but I make extensive use of LaunchBar's customization to automatically index project folders and pull up the exact documents I need.
Perhaps Butler just needs a documentation re-write. If anyone has experience in getting Butler to replace LB on the above dimensions, I'd love to hear it in the comments.
LaunchBar replacement? - Peter Maurer
Butler definitely needs a documentation re-write... ;-) Meanwhile, I'll try to respond to your comments here.1. "Abbreviations resolution": Try the new Butler 4.0b8! You'll notice an improvement.
2. "Locate and launch documents": Just drag the documents and folders in question to your configuration. When adding folders (your "Documents" folder, for instance), make sure the "Search contents for abbreviations" option is checked for the newly created "Local folder contents" item (NOT the Butler folder that contains this item). And please note that searching for abbreviations in the folder's content is limited to three levels of recursion.
