It prints selected text and images, but not as they appear on the page. It seems to move down a line before and after an image. I tried to print a crossword and it took 6 pages – a new line for every square of the grid. If this could be fixed, I would find it quite useful.

Actually never mind, you're right, that's what happens.This is due to the fact that it prints out exactly what you'd get if you were to do cut and paste into another application.
For what you're doing, you're probably best off taking a screen shot -- hit command + shift + 4, drag to select the portion of the screen you want to capture, and when you let go, the selection will be saved as "Picture 1" on the desktop. You can then open that up in preview.app, and print it out.
