Just checked. iTunes stores the tag information somewhere within itself, not in the MP3 file. So anything you change in iTunes will be lost if you move the MP3 files to somewhere else.

iTunes does so edit MP3 tags - digi8boy
Actually (in Mac, anyway) you will *lose* your MP3 tags as soon as you remove the tracks from iTunes. It seems to store aac info within the files, but not MP3. Don't believe me? Try it.The only way to force the files to update is to use iTunes' 'convert id3 tags' feature. It's really annoying actually. But not as annoying as when you bring older mp3's in that were ripped using an older version of iTunes and iTunes tells you that they were ripped from some other program, please re-import. Duhhhhh.

iTunes does so edit MP3 tags - dsheehy
What the hell are you talking about? iTunes definitely edits MP3 tags.It only uses the internal database for tracking older formats that do not support MP3 or AAC-style tags.
Otherwise, how the hell does all the track information get copied across when I send an MP3 file created in iTunes to a Windows machine over FTP and run it in WinAmp?
