I'm trying it out now, but my big question is just how good is the quality of the compresssed video? I'd like to import and catalog everything so I can import later to iMovie and eventually burn DVD's, but what kind of quality can I expect from the compressed video?

There are three settings for the quality of the compresesed video. it's always a trade off between quality and space unfortunately. The preferences window gives a rough of idea of the amount of disk space per minute will be used for each setting.

The compressed video is just for viewing your clips to see what you have. If you want to later import into iMovie or burn to DVD (at DV quality) you'll need to use your original tape and recapture the clips. You can't use the compressed clips or "uncompress" them to get your originals back (unfortunately).
