I work on OS 9.1 and have found Qpict 4.51 to be the best media manager.
I have tried the demos of both 5.01 and 5.28, the first and last 5.x versions if my numbers are off.
I have found that the 5.x versions are lacking in flexibilty that I have come to rely with 4.51.
The most notable are keyboard shortcuts. I love the shortcuts in 4.5 and found them lacking or too few to be useful in 5.x
Keyboard shortcuts to view different sizes, list or image view, and preferences are my most used.
I like the options that I can control in preferences. For example, with 4.5, I can set the image to open up within the confines of the monitor or at full size... something that I cannot find how to do in either 5 versions.
4.51 is also very stable. I found glitches with both 5 versions... the earlier is excusable, the latter should be clean and polished. For example, I cannot add files while viewing as a list... and after deleting a column in list view, I can not add nor subtract other columns until i close the window and reopen the entire index.
One other thing that i like with 4.51 is that I can use the Finder Comments within the program. For example, I can command+i on my file, and add a url address to my file... say, www.apple.com. When in list view or Info view, i can see my Finder Comment as an url. NEAT!!!!!
Unfortunately, this is removed in both versions of 5.x :(
One other, other thing i find that is missing is in the list view, one cannot see if the image is RGB or CMYK. With 4.51, I will never have that option, but perhaps Rune L., will add that in the future.
I use 9.1, carbonlib 1.1, quicktime 4, on a Umax S900.
i only just added carbonlib 1.6 to test 5.x.
I have installed 5.x many times thinking it had something that I was missing with 4.51, but every time I trash the sucker and come back home happily to 4.51. A wonderful program.
