10.3.1 ran just fine, I was stupid to update.
It f***ed up my whole system! Mac hang at Login Window forever, spinning wheel of death, Norton had to repair tons of major errors. Then after all was repaired I updated QuickTime and made the Security Update only to find the same thing happening after reboot, hang at Login Window!! Apple sux.

What you describe sounds a lot more like a dying hard drive than a software update problem. I'd suggest making a backup of your data as soon as possible and then taking the machine to an Apple store or service center and having a technician look at it. :-|
