Direct from the Symantec site
If you are seeing the error message "Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect could not continue. Please reinstall Norton AntiVirus and restart."

On the Go menu, click Applications.
Open Utilities.
Open Terminal.
At the prompt, type or copy and paste, the following text:

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

When asked for your password, enter your administrator password, then press return.
Quit Terminal.
Restart your computer.

The error message should no longer appear at startup.
