A seemingly better way to get rid of the "ZlibHex unknown subencoding" errors is to change the RFB-Pixelformat in your profile to 8-bit. This way, you can leave on the ZRLE option, and get the performance improvements that come with it. I found this info by perusing the bug tracking page for the COTVNC development site....
