I have used VueScan on three different systems now. Just switched to OS X.2.8 after having been on 9.2.2. I have used Macs since the system was called System (no number).

Ed helped me recover my serial number and I downloaded the latest and hooked it to my firewire scanner, and it is awesome! Five minutes configuration and it is a marvel!
