ShapeShifter has been billed as the next big thing for Mac theming, bringing stability, ease of use, and the opportunity to break Aqua's previously uncracked limitations. Is it revolutionary? Not yet. Is it insanely great? Definitely. Ease of Use (4/5): This is one of many areas where ShapeShifter shines. Unlike most other theme changers, ShapeShifter is extremely fast, very stable, and streamlined. However, there could be some improvements to the basic UI. One function that may confuse many users is restoring aqua, which can be done by disabling shape shifter (in the checkbox) and restarting your applications. Perhaps the finder and dock should relaunch on click, as when you switch themes. Another issue is the use of radio buttons within list items. The fact that you must select a button within a list is nonintuitive, and unnecessary. (Emphasized to help future users). According to the developer, these two minor but marring problems will be fixed in a future update. Support/Documentation (5/5): ShapeShifter comes with a friendly and active developer, the support of the very best mac theme designers, a relatively simple interface that hardly needs explaining, sufficient documentation, and a link to the MacNN GUI Customization forums, where you can find answers to all problems or questions. Support and documentation is undeniably well covered. Features (5/5): ShapeShifter comes with features that other theme changers have never had before. This includes overcoming Panther's limitations adn constraints involving hard coded shadows, the metal finder, the color of text, and perhaps some other important quirks and bugs. ShapeShifter is also very fast, and perhaps most importantly, more stable than any before it, due to its improved method of changing themes. This means no chance of your system going down, and even includes the plusses of being able to have different themes set up for separate users. However, the real promise lies in the future of ShapeShifter. The author has promised in-built application icon switching (to install, say, a Safari toolbar replacement that comes with many themes) and the tantalizing assurance that ShapeShifter will eventually be able to do anything. Does this mean that themes may eventually pass the boundaries of the basic Aqua window? Perhaps. ShapeShifter also comes with two themes designed by forefronts of the Mac theming front, Swiz and Max. These two themes are both of high quality, and demonstrate some features that are only supported by ShapeShifter. The biggest teaser of course is a poster for Bill Bart's upcoming BBX: Omega theme, which has many (including myself) salivating at the mouth. Bill has promised that Omega will be finished soon, and it will be ShapeShifter exclusive. Quality/Stability (5/5): ShapeShifter is more stable than any other theme changer, and there is no doubt that the package reeks of quality, from the 3D modeled application icon, to the slick included themes, to the top notch themers who stand behind its new theme format. This could not get better folks. Price (4/5): At the moment, ShapeShifter offers many advantages over its competition, including stability and the exclusive support of the top themers. However, it won't be until its promised features, a few bug fixes, and BBX: Omega is included in this package that ShapeShifter will become a true 5/5 in terms of pricing. The application is well worth purchasing for its promise alone, so for those pondering whether to buy it or not... be well assured that it is a worthy investment. For those thinking that this application is not worth 20 dollars at its current situation, check out the next version.
