Just installed, works GREAT. They finally fixed the backlight problem (turn the backlight on, and it sorta randomly goes off whenever it feels like it) - it now works the way it did on my 2G iPod (goes off after you've been idle for 30 secs or so).
Voice notes! Ability to offload digital photos (requires 3rd party hardware of course, but i'm there)!
The music quiz game is a blast: it plays a snippet of a song and 5 titles. The counter ticks down, eliminating choices while you use the wheel and select buttons to pick the correct song.
The battery indicator is now solid and counts down (it seems), by columns of pixels rather than in blocks.
Don't know what enhancements were made to on-the-go playlists and haven't had much time to see if there are less noticable gaps between songs, but preliminary testing seems to be that there is a slight improvement.
This is a MUST HAVE update!

The install is weird and fussy, I'll admit. Basically, run the package installer WITHOUT having the iPod plugged in. After package installer has run, plug the iPod in and follow the instructions. At one point you have to unplug the iPod to finish the install, and that should do it. I did have to reset the iPod once during the process, but the install did complete without having to resort to a restore. Sorry to hear about your woes. ~tThursday, October 16 2003 @ 01:19 PM PDT

Thanks, though exactly when should I have to unplug the iPod and restart the iPod?IMHO, Apple has dropped the ball on usability with these updates...not the point and click it should be.

while the iPod is plugged in and updating, a progress bar fills up on the iPod itself. after that the apple appears. i believe that's when you unplug it, and I think a message displays in the updater (on the Mac) telling you to do so. I think i had to reset it once (which in itself is weird on the new iPods) but after that I plugged it back in and it was recognized, I ejected and unplugged it and it was fine. It seems LOTS of people are having the same problems you are - so I guess you can take some solace in the fact that it's not *you*. People like you should make Apple aware of these issues - Apple doesn't monitor VT so all the noise here isn't going to get to them.Thursday, October 16 2003 @ 04:04 PM PDT

Just like the 2.0.1 update the 2.1 update install is as screwy as a Genetically Modified Apple. I have never been able to get these updaters to work without having to perform a Restore (which shouldn't have to happen."I get a messege that the installation has happened and that I need to wait while the iPod restarts, but nothing happens. What gives? Please provide details about how you got this update installed.
Thanks
