I just installed the updated 1.6.3 (from 2003-06-13, not 2002-09-04) and it works. The developer didn't advance the version number for some reason, and I had thought Charla 1.x was permanently broken by Yahoo changes and stopped development. So if you want basic Y! chat on OS X, but something faster and slicker than Java in the browser, there it is. Follow the links to the developer's page.
