Nice app, but author saddled with an attitude

Feedback Type:  Review

Product Platform: MacOSX

Used Product For: One Day

Recommend Product: NO

His attitude seems to influence both his responsiveness to feedback, and his software support. At the Xlife discussion board that serves as a support group for Acquisition users, the developer shows his true colors as a serial # Nazi by offering a cash reward or free Acquisition registration to anyone who reports pirated serial #s. I thought such an attitude was interesting coming from the developer of a program expressly designed to pirate other software, but hey, I've got my own hypocrite idiosyncrasies, so what the hell.

As a longtime Acquisition user/beta-tester, I quickly found a pirated serial # and sent it to the author, along with all pertinent info regarding it's source, and....he never got back to me. But sure enough, in the next release of Acquisition, he had included the SN I sent in among the list of pirated #s that would elicit a nasty message if entered to register Acquisition. Clearly, this is a principled developer we're dealing with; he's REALLY against software piracy as long as it's his own software.

Normally I wouldn't care, but this guy promises, in a sticky thread on his discussion board, that any and all reports of serial # piracy will be rewarded. My reward is doubtlessly not the only one to go unacknowledged by this rogue developer. He won't reply to my emails, so perhaps by posting here I can inform him that he will NEVER get a registration fee from me. It's unfortunate, because he really does deserve compensation for an otherwise totally *censored*in' app, but his attitude begs for a jumbo can of whoop-ass.

Let me guess, you're American? These apps are designed expressly for sharing digital information. Just because your entire culture is made up of financial transactions doesn't mean that there is nothing to share that isn't copyrighted.

Let me guess, you're naive?

Run a search on Acquistion with any keyword. Any keywords that return results will include several (or mostly) copyrighted files/media.

In fact, you'd have a much harder time finding legal downloads on Gnutella than illegal. Say whatever you want about what the application "could" be used for - like downloading the formula for magical pixie dust from the moon - but be honest about what it's really used for - download illegal files from other users - and lose the superior attitude. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Charging for Acquisition is Perfectly Legit - Jeff Mincey

You miss the point. The point is that file sharing technology is perfectly legal and legitimate. The fact that some common USES of this technology may be questionable does not mean the same can be said of the technology itself. Therefore, there is no irony in charging for this product.

Charging for Acquisition is Perfectly Legit - Xeater

Listen, I never said that it wasn't legit to charge for acquisition. I simply found it hypocritical that the developer is such a nazi about piracy when it comes to his own application. Here is a developer who strictly enforces registration, going so far as to endow his little piece of nagware with phone-home capability, and yet his app is used almost exclusively to pirate OTHER files! I'd love to hear his rationalization for this logic-fart.

Sure, there are legal uses for Acqusition, but anyone who believes for one second that the intent of the app is anything other than piracy is insane. Just check out the support forums and it's clear that most users, the developer included, are using Acquisition in ways that corporate thugs would scold at.

And while I would agree that most of my fellow Americans are materialistic and vain, I don't appreciate being lumped together with them. I understand that recent world events set in motion by that smirking chimp in the White House have reflected poorly on the USA, but not all of us are like that...and just remember that it is that poodle Tony Blair who is Dubya's enabler.

Nice app, but author saddled with an attitude - Roy Munson

I agree with the original post of this thread. The developer can be so damn aloof and arrogant its shocking. I too have sent him emails in the past to which have gone unanswered. I used to follow the forums and watched his infantile behaviour. I have thus lost total respect for this pompous wanker.

On a positive note, if this developer switced to the Overnet platform or incorporated something other than just Gnutella, this would be a something to wreckon with.
