Final Draft remains the de facto standard for studio screenwriters. I'm one of them and I have never ever encountered anyone using anything else. I have used this app daily for five years and in that time I have grown to loathe it. It is not a professional standard application. It quits unexpectedly, sometimes when you are saving a document, overwriting a valid document with an empty stub. It doesn't preserve your auto-save settings reliably. The various outlining and character tools are useless. It corrupts screenplays, moving scene numbers and formatting around randomly. I have reported all these bugs to FD for years. Their best suggestion has been to export it as text and re-import, then add the scene numbers. I think you can imagine what that would be like in page-locked production hell.
One day someone will produce a screenwriting app which will treat a script as an XML document and allow you to switch between a genuine (hierarchical) outline view, script view and a proper 3x5 card manipulation view, which will not crash, and which will be $60 shareware. On that day Final Draft will be over and no-one will shed a tear. If anyone is interested in developing such an app, please contact me @ and I can send you a full specification.
The only reason to buy this application is if you have to. If you do not HAVE to, please don't.
UPDATE: Final Draft today yet again corrupted a production script. This script was authored only in Final Draft. The second time this has happened in less than a week. I have given up reporting the bug to Final Draft since no action is ever taken on it. It has persisted through total clean reinstalls on clean machines.

Buggy application you grow to hate - bossa nova
deadman,I support quite a few writers who use it and I have never seen the issue you are referring to. I must admit I have seen some screwy things since they added the OS X version updates. My favorite was the version that didn't print. AT ALL. But I was always able to fix it by downloading the latest update. I do wish they would do something else with the Authorization scheme. It really sux especially when you don't have an internet connection or a phone handy to call and do a manual. You may want to try Movie Magic Screenwriter. The people who use it seem to feel pretty good about it. Of Course there is also scriptware but it doesn't offer much.
I think you should give em' a break though. All developers have had a rough time making the transition to OS X and I am sure you would want em' to cut you some slack if you were in the same position.

Buggy application you grow to hate -
I completely agree with this review.I have used this program since 1991 mainly beause it was the only program of its kind written for Mac. It has never worked properly in the OSX environment.
The tech suport is so bad now it borders on the ludicrous. I paid $2.50 per minute to have someone read me the wed site answer base!?
The resident font will not print on many HP printers. The program not only crashes upon saves, but turns off the auto backup feature all by itself.
If anyone knows any trick to retrieving a file which has been gutted and left for dead on the hard drive, I would be very grateful. I've lost fifteen days of work.

Buggy application you grow to hate - zatomic
deadman,I'd like to take you up on that offer for a complete spec of a proper screenwriting application. I can't make any promises about if/when I'll get it done, but I'd like to try. Drop me a line at 'zatomic at dizzybomb dot org'.
