Downloaded this software, and got a 9.1 MB ".sh" file, which wouldn't unstuff. Browsed the dev's mildly chaotic website for info about this product and learned, "SysInfoTM supports both a sophisticated Command Line Interface (CLI) for consumption by both humans and programs". Consumption...? Anyway, it appears a user must use the command line just to install this thing. Oi vey. Their site won't even divulge the price unless you create a free account and log in. No thanks, I get enough spam

Downloaded file is: mcsysinfo-5.1.1-macosx-powermac.sh. Let me take a different approach. I know what a .sh file is but where is the binary header, protection of some sort for download over internet? Even at 20 seconds to download with broadband I have no way of knowing I got a decent file - tar? .dmg? gzip? No.You think I'm going to install a file of this sort with no clear instructions (CLI or otherwise) as to what to do with it, etc.? This whole setup by developer (I also looked at website) may make uber geek happy, but most CLI users would be hesitant (if smart) to even touch this file.......original commentary not the best in the world but this whole setup certainly not to my liking. Presumably developer has a Mac. Stick this in folder with a brief readme and stuff, tar, zip whatever the thing first.Monday, October 25 2004 @ 07:43 PM PDT

Standard UNIX installation script. Works perfectly. If you want to know what it does look at the damned script. Everything it does is there. I think you're ignorant, rather than uninformed. Pick up some UNIX books and a basic understanding of installation shell scripts.Friday, March 18 2005 @ 04:44 PM PST

Doesn't provide anything that Apple's System Profiler doesn't. My pay for a script when you've allready got a GUI for free. Senseless.Friday, March 18 2005 @ 04:52 PM PST

The first line of the description says that it's for 'System Administrators'. .sh files don't unstuff, they are shell scripts. Don't knock something just because you don't understand it.Reply to This
