Before installing Quake III Arena update you must have the current Point Release installed on your system. You can download the Point Release 1.32 from fileplanet (see my other post below).
1) Using a program like StuffIt Expander, decompress the point release archive if it isn't already. A package file will be placed on the desktop named Quake3-132.pkg.
2) Double-click the package file - it will open the installer for the Point Release.
3) Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the point release installation.
4) Open the Quake III Arena CD.
5) Open the Quake3 folder.
6) Open the BaseQ3 folder.
7) Copy the PAK0.PK3 file from the CD to the BaseQ3 folder on your hard drive.
Now you can run the Quake3-132-AltivecTest2.pkg update. Should run smooth as silk.

OK, here's a quick update tutorial... - Unkie

Who would need this update?
I went through installing it on my G4, and all I got was crunchy sound, and frequent crashes..
Is this a general update for everyone's Mac OS X, or is it intended for a specific audience?
Thanks,
Eric
