it DESERVES all the success. OBJECTIVITY is essential when reviewing products. it's the FIRST OSX icon archiving app! That alone make it a winner. OSX has been out over 1 year & it took the guts of ChickenByte to do it. finally OS9 users are saved. People like i, have over 20,000 icons organized, themed, described etc in an old app. IconBox comes to the rescue. i'm never the type to beat around the bush. i bluntly say nothing but the truth. the app is 4-stars out of 5. it's not perfect. but it's sweet nevertheless & a great solution with much potential. give it time. it's worth every penny.

on VersionTracker all not all fair. one shouldn't overlook the advantages or focus on only the negative, which is usually written out of frustration. it's a great overall app & has great potential. it needs to mature, but it does a lot already. ChickenBox is not Adobe. It's a small developer. Let's give it a break. After all, the Mac is mostly great because of small developers & its evangelizing fans. that's why Apple survived. Humans are not animals because they have the capacity to think. It's irresponsible, unfair & laziness for us users to just complain about products. 1) why don't we talk to the developer if we find problems, they obviously want to sell, so they usually listen. 2) nothing in life works perfectly fine in all situations at all times. plus, let's not forget that it's just the start. If IconBox is already the pioneer & does have a neat interface, let's look forward to its development, instead of killing it from the start.
<<< its advantages >>>
1) pioneer
2) clean interface
3) quick response to feedback / bug fixes / feature demand
4) affordable (worth more, actually)
5) small developer = more flexibility & better response to users
6) XIcons.com (the leading OSX icon database worldwide) integration
7) iPhoto-like in/out zoom / slide factor (really cool to witness)
<<< the competition >>>
1) none! (until 10 june '03 at least)
2) IconFactory (the world's most gorgeous icon site under OS9 & now X)
has announced Pixadex?IconBox's only competition. Its screenshot
looks promising yet it's still not out.
3) Under OS9 the best was IconFactory's IconDropper, but only in terms of interface. The BEST was Montalcini's IconArchiver, with tremendous power features. Unfortunately, there's no X version of IA. But surely both IconFactory & ChickenBox will learn from it.

3-stars.
that's fair considering the bugs he found.
as with any software, bugs are always there, even Microsoft with the 1000s of programmers & millions of $, can't handle it. so, Ray's problems are individual, not widespread to most users, unless they don't take the time to complain. but support exists for feedback. the problem i suspect, has to do with system extension conflicts or simply upgrading to the latest OS X version 10.26. that's usually the best to start on, since developers can't be expected to make it compatible to all systems. even the world's biggest layout software publisher quark, hasn't even upgraded to OSX yet, due to reprogramming. i couldn't replicate the icon duplication problem upon import. a 2nd solution might be to check on extension conflicts. look on VTracker for some utility that handles that kind of problem. but let's keep up the feedback, so the authors can fix what's wrong.

1-star.
Crippleware is too harsh.
1) IconBox is a new app + a new kind of app, both of which need time to mature (Photoshop 1.0 was lousy too)
2) upgrading to OSX 10.26 could solve the problems. it's free if upgrading from 10.2. Ctuur's vers. 10.15 was still pretty problematic with many other applications too, which Apple keeps fixing as they update. it's not an IconBox-specific problem, at X 10.15.
3) if you don't wish to upgrade systems, then give developer feedback, & within a week you should have a solution or upgrade, but to put it down so much, is only harmful to the software that you bought in the first place, to solve your desired problems?it's self-destructive. if, after several contacts, the authors don't solve your problems, then you have the right to negate. give them a chance. one should contact the author before stating devastating comments on such a popular site as VT.

1-star.
that the app quits upon importing even a single icon, is not easily replicable. it depends on his/her extensions & apps & OS version installed. the comment is too vague, there's not enough detail to analyze the results. but again, it's all relative. the app works fine for many people. maybe because they use OS 10.26?who knows.

here's a mature soul.
he first brought the app down completely, yet quickly wisened up. not because he/she reviewed his own review into only positive feedback, but because of the courage to admit of his mistakes, though it's to do with the upgrade to IconBox.
as he/she says, upon feedback to the authors, most/all problems were fixed. there you go. no one in the world is a God to be able to foresee all problems. we all have a mouth & a brain to discuss. there's no need for more violence on this planet.
to all future commentators
----------------------------------------
to be fair to all users & the competition, when it arrives, one has to be objective. mgoldschmidt praised IconBox so much now, he states it is THE one to use for icon archiving. well, it's the only one available so far, & it's still not perfected, yet it did it first & will only improve. one thing's for sure. IconBox solves current problems of organizing icons, quite nicely, smoothly, fast. more to come! it's worth every penny, especially when knowing that the authors are responsive to suggestions, whether solving bugs or adding wish list features!
let's keep the feedback. OSX is too cool an OS. let's make it even more unbeatable by encouraging authors like ChickenBox to continue. i'm no author, but the firm to have understood pirating the most, was MetaCreations.com. they never penalized users for pirating. they simply commented that if one uses an app regularly, then one should pay for it. payment only enables your favorite app to improve! & when it only costs $13, who can't afford that. otherwise, let's use demos. it would be sad to see IconBox die, when it brought so much hope in its category. it's doing well sofar. we need to be more objective, more honest with each other, & supportive of things cool. didn't you react with sheer joy when you finally found your icon app to solve your problems? use the joy & excitement to comment. in the end, the authors deserve the success, because they listen to us.

iCONBOX is revolutionary. It DESERVES awards! - Xeater
Either this guy is a "friend" of the developer, or he is an utter tool. And anyone with over 20,000 custom icons on their Mac is downright scary, unless they're maintaining an icon site. Maybe that's this guy's program, but either way he needs to step away from the computer. A fair, balanced, OBJECTIVE review doesn't begin by attacking other reviews, it doesn't list only the positive attributes while spinning the negatives into highlights, it doesn't give detailed critiques of every other posters opinions. These types of reviews call into question the rating summary of every app at versiontracker, requiring one to scan the reviews for tools and chumps to verify the summary. They degrade the quality of versiontracker as a whole. I think it's about time for a slash-dot style of modding here so we can filter out the dolts and separate the software from the crapware.Reply to This
