Like every issue of software variety on the Mac, getting a Mud client you don't have to emulate another operating system to run is a problem. It's too bad the guy that made Rapscallion fell off the face of the earth, because it was nearly perfect.

And then there's Xmud. Okay, it's not really that bad, but that was a good transition. The features seem to be nearly all there (except being able to display bright/dim colors). That's good.

Looks like there will eventually be adequate documentation, that's good.

But it's written in REALBasic!!!!!!! !!!! <-extra exclaimation to indicate distaste

In Rapscallion, if you type in something and then press return a whole bunch of times, a fraction of a second after you finish pressing return the final message from the server is displayed. In this high level language, that time is measured in whole seconds. The end result is a client that makes busy servers unplayable, or at least unbearable. (And yes, I realize this is "Alpha," but I am very skeptical that this problem will ever go away)

For the love of god, somebody Carbonize Rapscallion! Until then, every single Mac OS X mud client project will be compared to Rappie, and so far all of them come up short.

... and before you flame, no it isn't "server lag." Those seconds I'm talking about apply to when the message you send is ECHOED to the screen too, not just the message from the server. I actually got a stopwatch cursor when I abused it really bad :( Text based app + stopwatch cursor = something's wrong

Hello. I'm glad you took the time to write a short review of Xmud but there are a few little things that bother me about it.
First off, why should an application be bad just because its written in REALbasic? There are a bunch of REALbasic applications which are stable and work very good. I'm sure you have one somewhere on your hard disk.
Second, since you are aware of Xmud's alpha stage, you could easily take a second and post an anonymous post into the discussion forum. I'm aware of partial slowness of Xmud but writing a MUD client is not really a trivial task.
Watch out for future versions, I don't think there will ever be a Rapscallion carbon port - thats why Xmud is here.

I am a programmer myself, so I understand how much of a project a MUD client can be (especially one with scripting). As both a programmer and a user, I really believe in efficiency. To give you some idea, my favorite language right now is MIPS assembly.

The level of abstraction REALBasic gives you from what's actually going on makes it easier to program things with, but at the cost of efficiency. And really, that's the only thing wrong with your app - everything else seems great. I was making the assumption that the sheer lack of speed I get when doing something as simple as *typing* was a fundamental problem with the language and not your coding. In which case, I would be very surprised if you ever manage to overcome it. Let me state again that I am pleased with the variety of features, but the program's main function is to display text and it can't do it properly.

I'll applaud you if you fix it, but if it isn't addressed, then to be blunt I would rather launch Classic. :P

There IS a (half-) Carbonized version of Rapscallion available at http://rapscallion.co.uk. It's certainly the best OS X MUD client available.

Do you know of anyway to get the source code for rapscallion? I would love to port it to OS X, but I cannot get to the homepage listed within the program.

Arg. You're too late. He's taken down the site, from where (reputedly) he had the source code available. Perhaps you can find someone who has it. This link might be helpful: <http://www.rentacoder.com/RentACoder/misc/BidRequests/ShowBidRequest.asp?lngBidRequestId=437354>
