LabAssistant briefly contacts our server upon launch to check if there's a new version available. It downloads a small text file with the versioninfo (check it out: http://www.mekentosj.com/versionlabassistant.txt). We do not register any user info on this in any way. But, you're right, this check should have a preference to turn it off, like there is in EnzymeX, our other program. LabAssistant 2 is underway, and will definitely have this build-in.
