I'd like to verify Paul's report. The firewire version updated my internal EIDW without a problem. Didn't try the USB updater. A "PC" EIDW CRW-F1 makes a great second drive in a MDD and is much cheaper than an official "Mac" version - I got mine for $120 with a $20 rebate for a net of $100. Kudos to Yamaha for releasing the Mac updater so fast!
