Maybe you should also try a bit of maintenance and rebuild your desktop files. Restart and hold Comamnd (Apple) and Option (Alt) down all during startup. When the Finder loads it will ask you to rebuild your desktop files. Click OK, get a cup of coffee, then restart again and try the updater.
