Mark, iTunes' encode speed should not be affected by any firmware updates. DVD-ROM audio extraction is significantly faster than MP3 encoding, so if you want iTunes to encode fast, then you'll have to go get yourself a new computer. Better yet, since you're a G4 user, go get DropMP3 or any other encoder that uses the Altivec-optimized LAME SharedLib.
