Product Description:
iPod Access is the premier application for transferring songs from your iPod to your Windows PC. iPod Access is able to utilize the iPod internal database so that it can display your iPod's contents almost instantly. This includes tag information from protected AAC files that have been purchased from the iTunes Music Store and all playlist information. Version 2.9.3 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

To avoid iTunes erasing your iPod your iPod must be put into Manual Mode.
For all iPods except the Shuffle:
*****************************************************
- Start iTunes.
- Connect the iPod. With iTunes in front, immediately hold down the keys command-option (Mac OS X) or shift-control-alt (Windows XP/2000). When the iPod appears in the iTunes source column, wait five seconds, then release the keys. This will skip the automatic iPod update.
- Set the iPod preferences to "Manually manage songs and playlists". This disables the automatic iPod update.
To open the iPod preferences, select the iPod within iTunes source column, then click onto the upcoming iPod icon at the right bottom of the iTunes window (the left icon).
For the iPod shuffle:

Although the iPod Shuffle can not be put into manual mode songs can syill be successfully transfered.iPod Access will allow you to transfer songs from your shuffle to your computer but it will not prevent an automatic update if iTunes is opened. For this reason it is recommended iPod shuffle users restore data to a computer or user account other than the one to which the shuffle is linked.
- Connect the shuffle to a computer that it is NOT linked to.
- Open iTunes. When the iTunes dialog asks you to re-link your shuffle DO NOT press either button.
- Open iPod Access.
- Select the songs form the lower window to copy.
- Press the "Copy" button in the Toolbar above.
- Select a folder to copy the music into.
- After the copy is finished quit iPod Access.
- In iTunes click NO in the dialog asking to re-link your shuffle
- Under the file menu in Itunes select "Add Folder to Library" (or "Add to Library" on Mac OSX) and select the same folder you copied all of the music into.

The instructions do not account for the process of a first time hook-up with your iPod. As a result I never got to use iPod Access for the purpose I purchased it for -- iTunes erased the iPod library even though I strictly followed the Access instructions for avoiding that outcome. Support was rude and either doesn't understand this basic need or was refusing to acknowledge the failing.
