I tried 0.9.4 for a few weeks. I've now uninstalled it and gone back to 0.8.6. I've used VLC as my primary media player for about 4 years.
It simply does not work as well as 0.8.6. It is slower to load from file. DVDs have video interlacing artifacts clearly visible.
The scroll wheel changing the volume is useless and deeply annoying. There is no way of changing this in preferences.
The interface is HORRIFIC. There's an inch of wasted screen to accommodate the comically large buttons. The volume slider is rainbow colored and ugly beyond belief. The play/pause button is huge, it's like a child's toy.
While the 0.8.6 interface looked like a piece of Windows 3.11 shareware, at least it wasn't distracting, and it didn't waste screen space.
Sadly, they also haven't fixed the poor window management in 0.9.4 either. Just once, I'd like to click on the maximize button and it actually maximizes the window. Most often it's at least 3 clicks to get a maximized window.
I can only hope that the next version has a much better interface, is faster, and the retarded mouse volume controls are reverted back to normal -- or at least we have a choice. Otherwise 0.8.6 will be the version I'm sticking with, it's a much better player than 0.9.4

This is a good program, but I cannot understand the versions. Seemingly not much differences between two versions. The other; good program, and practically you can use with each usual file extentions, but I dare not say that the GUI is nice.... it is ugly in reality.

I really don't know why I bother upgrading--VLC media player, whatever version I've used, never seems to be stumped by a file or crash for no apparent reason. I've been using 8.6d for five months now and it's as unflappable as its predecessors. Time to download 0.8.6f and continue with VideoLAN's boring string of successes, I suppose.
Softsub Problem - Version: 0.8.6f, 5/17/2008 08:38AM PST

MKV format files are becoming more popular, especially with H264 HD files.
The problem is that most, though not all, MKV's have softsubs, which VLC is almost completely unable to handle properly.
If two characters are speaking simultaneously, the Subs overlay each other.
Worse still, comments and other notes which appear within {} are displayed too, either with the text they accompany or overlayed.
You want to see how bad it can get? Try downloading the "Underwater" version of this anime where the fansubbers make their feelings about VLC known<_<

Anyway, other than this, VLC player is still the best media player available. PowerDVD plays anime dvd's fine, but under Vista64 all lines show a real bad case of the "jaggies" where their anti-aliasing has failed completely. With VLC all the lines are nice and smooth. Even better, I can even use the same drive to play all regions.
The softsub problem needs to be solved asap, as more and more groups are releasing in this format. Plus I like seeing films and TV anime in HD^_^

Awesome player. For years I would use only Window Media Player, but I always had to download a special driver for DVD type videos and others. This player, VLC players everything. Love it. I replaced all my computers with this player.
If you download the latest version (it is still 0.9.6, just a newer build) It fixes these issues and many others that have cropped up since the new interface overhaul in 0.9.x. This is expected when ever you do a major overhaul of a program. If it isn't stable and polished enough for you go back to one of the last versions of 0.8.x untill the bugs are worked out.
