Product Description:

iPod Software 2.1 adds significant enhancements to iPod. Some features require iTunes 4, now available for Macintosh and Windows.

What's new in this version:

Added support for AAC audio files, including songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store.
Added Voice Memos application (requires optional iPod-compatible microphone, available at www.apple.com/store)
Added digital photo storage functionality (requires optional iPod-compatible photo card reader, available at www.apple.com/store)
Enhanced On-The-Go playlist functionality
Improved playback performance
Added Music Quiz game
Added user adjustable deep sleep timer
Improved backlight functionality
Improved battery meter

Additional Requirements:

A PC with built-in FireWire or USB 2.0, or a Windows-certified FireWire or USB 2.0 card
Windows ME (FireWire only)/2000/XP

Editor's Notes:

IMPORTANT NOTE: iPod Software 2.1 supports only iPods with a dock connector running Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Windows ME users with a dock connector should download iPod Software 2.0.1.

Touch-wheel and scroll-wheel iPod owners without a dock connector should download iPod Software Update 1.3.1 for Mac OS X v10.1.2 or later or iPod Software Update 1.3 for Windows Me/2000/XP. (iPod Software Update 1.3.1 is required for use with Mac OS X v10.3 Panther)

Your sight redirects me to the Apple website and Apple does not offer the older update. The new update does not work on my iPod, I need the old update so this is not helping me. How can I get an older update?

Version 2.1 creates a problem for 3G iPods working with Windows. While docked it has become impossible to use the iPod, with a constant OK to disconnect frozen on the poor little pod. This is obviosly a bug since the same behavior does not occur with Macs. Though there are some good features introduced you should hold off updating if you have a 3G iPod and you use it with Windows.

This new version fixes a couple of problems - the click between tracks and the none-dynamic On-The-Go playlists. I do agree with the criticisms that the older iPod should benefit from the new features. If they bought out a version 3 in a years time and refused to update mine i'd be annoyed and definitely wouldn't shell out cash to benefit from the upgrade. Im sure the tracks sound better too!
