I downloaded and installed the app, entered the free registration code that they give on their website and started playing.
The playing was done on my laptop while at home and in bed, connected to the net via my wireless network and cable modem. I pulled down the database type menu and select MS SQL and then entered the ip address in the box next to it. When I hit connect I was prompted for the username and password. However, it needs NTWDBLIB.DLL to use MS SQL natively.
Please note... I'm far from an SQL/Database expert... yet I got CuteSQL up and running and performing queries across the internet without ever touching a help file.
So I then select MySQL 3 (another natively supported database) and did the same. With the same results but that it needs libmysql.dll to use it natively.
No problem, I DO have those dlls on another system.
So I then chose ODBC, picked my MS SQL Server, connected and started running queries.
CuteSQL supports 8 different databases natively but obviously needs at least one runtime file for each. This isn't unusual... I've run into it with My SQL front ends before.
With ADO and ODBC support however, there's pretty much nothing you shouldn't be able to connect to and use.
While this isn't as fancy as some front ends I've seen... it does give you a "console" window for entering commands and SQL Scripts and shows you the returned resultset and messages in tabbed grid and message windows.
Most of the commercial/shareware front ends offer more (browsing tables, etc.) but for free, CuteSQL is a wonderful (and FAST little tool.) This is superior to another SQL Console type shareware program that I looked at today... similar features but the other one is about $30.
All in all, I'm very impressed with this little utility. Of course now I need to check out the same company's flagship product which I'm sure was their intention.
