Product Description:

Full-featured archiving utility that can handle RAR, ZIP, ARJ, CAB and LZH files.WinRAR can create "RAR" archives that are frequently smaller than ZIP or ARJ files. RAR files can be self-extracting EXE files, they can perform authenticity verification on themselves, and they can contain embedded color ANSI comments. In addition to the RAR format, WinRAR supports a variety of popular archive formats. It can integrate with the Windows shell, making it a snap to work with almost any type of archive. For ZIP archives, WinRAR can perform extracting, testing, creating, updating, deleting, and repairing operations. It also lets you add or modify comments and create self-extracting ZIP archives.

Benefits include:
  • WinRAR provides complete support for RAR and ZIP archives and is able to unpack CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO archives.
  • WinRAR offers a graphic interactive interface utilizing mouse and menus as well as the command line interface.
  • WinRAR is easier to use than many other archivers with the inclusion of a special "Wizard" mode which allows instant access to the basic archiving functions through a simple question and answer procedure. This avoids confusion in the early stages of use.

What's new in this version:

  • previous versions could display an incorrect value in the "Files slack" field of "File information" dialog;
  • minor corrections in ZIP repair command.

Simply the best, most reliable archiver around. In the next version it will support 7z file creation. Most of my RAR files are 4.4G on DVD, and I've tested larger files for the heck of it with no problems. Like others, WinRAR offers so many options, and being a mature program and format, it's rock solid.

There is very little difference between 7z Ultra vs. RAR Best, and when creating solid archives, RAR wins out every time. 1G game file was compressed to 501M using 7z Ultra (7-Zip) and took 5:55, whereas WinRAR Best compressed the same 1G file to 505M but only took 1:52 — less than two minutes, and less than a 1% difference in file size (on my 3.4GHz machine). Run your own tests. And in the next version, Roshal has plans to support 7z creation, thus continuing WinRAR's tradition of giving users the best of both worlds.
