Product Description:

PeaZip free archiver is a portable, open source archiving and compression utility, featuring strong encryption and file split/join tools. PeaZip is cross platform software, it runs on Windows 9x, 2000, XP, Vista and on Linux and supports handling of many archive and compression formats:

Full support (read and write): 7Z, 7Z-sfx, BZip2/TBZ2, GZip/TGZ, LPAQ, PAQ, PEA, QUAD, split, TAR, UPX, ZIP.

Open, browse, extract, test: ACE, ARJ, CAB, CHM, COMPOUND (MSI, DOC, XSL, PPT), CPIO, ISO, Java(JAR, EAR, WAR), Linux (DEB, PET/PUP, RPM, SLP), LHA/LZH, NSIS, OOo, PAK/PK3/PK4, RAR, WIM, XPI, Z/TZ.

PeaZip features a powerful archive browser with search and history features for intuitive navigation in archive's content, and allows to apply fine-grained multiple exclusion and inclusion filter rules to the archive. PeaZip allows to create, edit and restore archive's layout for speeding up archiving or backup operation's definition.

The program can also handle multiple archives at once; export job definition as command line; create detailed job log; encrypt, split and join files and compress executables with strip/UPX, benchmark the system and wipe files (secure file deletion).

PeaZip's most used functions are available in SendTo and context menu (in Windows) and as .desktop files for contextual menus (in Linux). The user interface is skinnable for colors, transparence and icons.

What's new in this version:

  • Added support for LZMA archives; currently supported formats: 71 extensions grouped in 43 families;
  • Improved support for large archives: if browsing takes too much time/memory (customisable amount), it stops allowing the user to narrow the selection using in-archive search and filter functions;
  • Removed winxpstyle.lpk dependency to allow project's build with standard out-of-the-box Lazarus install
  • Updated W.E. library with util_2008-03-30 package
  • Updated 7z backend to 4.58
  • (Windows) "Run as different user" (Tools) to start the application with alternate credentials and environment
  • (Windows) "System tools" submenu (Tools): access to system's defrag, disk cleanup, disk management, control panel, computer management and task manager.

Interesting new software: it has a striking uncommon kind of interface for an archiver, simple to use but very flexible also for advanced archiving/backup tasks.
The native archive format has interesting features too (mainly security and integrity focused), however many other format whidely used are supported like zip, tar, 7z... making it a nice choice for a really alternative archiving software.
