Product Description:

REAPER is a powerful but sensible Windows program that lets you record, edit, render and arrange multi-track waveform audio.
REAPER provides an extensive set of features, but is a very small and lightweight application (the installer is less than 1 megabyte, and includes many effects and a sample project).
Here are some key features of "REAPER":

Supports ASIO, Kernel Streaming, WaveOut, and DirectSound for playback and recording
Reads WAV, OGG, and MP3 files, records WAV files
Lets you arrange any number of items in any number of tracks
Supports audio processing plug-ins (DirectX and Jesusonic)
Volume, pan controls and envelopes per track
Multi-layer undo/redo support
User creatable color themes

What's new in this version:

FX MIDI learn can now be set to only be active when the track or item is selected, allowing more context sensitive controls.
Action: view fx chain for master track (for Rene).
HUI track naming and clearing updates (for Novation Automap).
Next/Previous transient navigation now set focus onto edit cursor (pre-2.5 behavior).
Mousewheel now works to scroll in track envelopes/routing windows, routing matrix.
Fix for ungraceful MIDI program name reporting in Stylus RMX, Proteus, possibly other VSTis.
MIDI editor loads default reabank.
fixed non-looping items pre-echo of next loop when pitch shifting/timestretch.
internal envelope defaults cleanups.
JS: compscope (for measuring dynamic response of compressors).
JS: remaincalm.org's glitch processors.
JS: liteon's cheby24db and moog filters.
AlphaTrack/FaderPort/TranzPort: better master track selection behavio.

Reaper is a nice application but it is not freeware as you say. Let call things what they really are: it is shareware.

Installed reaper0938-install.exe on win98se.
Execution of Reaper always yields a crash with:

REAPER executed an invalid instruction in
module JESUS.DLL at 018f:6d180d49.
