harald.dehnerAfter I found D2X-XL working fine - no, nearly perfect - for me, I still would like to ask for the following features:
- support for more than 8 players
(breaking the limit of the originals) - Descent I Menu (for those misusing D2XXL as D1XXL :-)
- titlescreen
- menu-colors
- menu-background
- menu-music
- possibility to turn on the in-game-automap-feature for multiplayer WITHOUT enabling "show all players on automap"
(or didn´t I just miss how to do this?) - small previews of advanced graphic-settings, e.g. lightmap-scale or reticle-setting (perhaps just by showing different small screenshots)
- resolution-, overall-graphics- and gameplay-settings independent from player-profile, so every new player can instantly play without running through all the menus again (or perhaps "clone-player"-button in pilot-menu?)
- "favourites" for server-adresses
- enableing more cocpit-window-size-options, especially different sized windows (e.g. automap bigger than rear-window)
- perhaps more cockpit-windows (e.g. automap, rear, AND weapon :-)
- perhaps free positioning / sizing of cockpit-windows?
(do you know "Need for Speed Porsche" where you can drag and drop the different GUI-items in the options-menu?) - detailed listing of the files needed to run Descent I with D2XXL from a seperate D1-only folder
(you certainly do not need the D2-Intro-movie in there...) - show game-window AND automap-screen simultaneously - on 2 screens
(for those lucky ones having 2 monitors)
Those suggestions would just be the extra-candy.
Here some flaws I found testing D2XXL:
- dialogue-behaviour:
- some dialogue-windows react to pressing by returning not one hierarchy-level but more (e.g. some multiplayer-sub-dialogues which leave to multiplayer-main-dialogue instead of just returning to the previous menu)
- play-video-menu exits to main menu after playing a movie :-(
- multiplayer: sometimes some items do not rotate but hang frozen in mid-air
- multiplayer: depending on which PC is server and which joins sometimes the client´s mouse-reaction is very slow (regardless of mouse-speed, fast-pitch and mouselook-settings)
Hope I could help...

harald.dehnerAfter Descent I & II refused to run on "modern" PCs I searched and found D1X & D2X.
Great. The games ran again but with minor flaws (missing cockpit views, ugly reticles, limited resolution-choices...).
Then I upgraded my PC and D1X / D2X ceased to run, too :-(
Now I found D2X-XL - and it brings back those all-time-favourites - again!
Plus staying closer to the originals!
Plus enhancing graphics and gameplay in very sensible ways!
Here is my top 10 in new features:
- supports modern PCs (3 GHz AMD 64, GeForce 6600)
- show Automap in-game (why didn´t they do that in the first place!?)
- massively improved mouse-steering
- the cockpit and reticle are back
- resolution up to 1600x1200
- colored lighting
- Mac OS X support
- support for Descent I (the better one imho...)
- no single crash (3 different PCs, 1 Mac)
- enhanced options and cmd-line-switches
So I award it a fully-deserved 5-of-5 stars!!
Nevertheless there are some (additional) features, I´d like to wish for - see other feedback)
Best regards!
