Product Description:

Second Life is a virtual world - a 3D online persistent space totally created and evolved by its users. Within this vast and rapidly expanding place, you can do, create or become just about anything you can imagine. Built-in content creation tools let you make almost anything you can imagine, in real time and in collaboration with others. An incredibly detailed digital body ('Avatar') allows a rich and customizable identity. A powerful physics simulation running on a backbone of hundreds of connected computers and growing with the population allows you to be immersed in a visceral, interactive world that as of November 2005 holds more than 80,000 residents. The ability to design and resell 3D content, combined with the ability to own and develop land and a microcurrency, which can be exchanged to real money means that you can build a real business entirely within Second Life.

Second Life Reviewsome say Metaverse... - Version: 1.4.7, 8/5/2004 08:41PM PST

Second Life. it's not easy to describe. you really can not appreciate the depth of this experience without knowing it first hand. i will try to convey what i can about this incredibly unique MMO.

Who you are: anyone you want to be! the amount of customization immediately available to you is astounding. sizes, shapes, colors.. of body parts, hair, eyes, etc.. are practically limitless! beyond that you can build and add attachments to your character/avatar.. hair pieces, armor, nails, claws, cabin-hats (lol). of course, you can also buy or create tattoos of anything to go anywhere.

What you do: almost anything you want! there is an ever-expanding land mass where anyone can buy land, the amount you can own depends on the tier you choose. from $0 extra up to $195+ will buy you from 512 square meters to an entire "sim". (Sim = one square land mass, most are part of the larger continent as a whole)
you can build whatever you want with the in-game building tools. furniture, houses, clubs, attachments, weapons, vehicles, sculpture... anything you can think of.
you can create clothing to your own specifications. make the texture in a paint program and upload it to use in the game. Second Life (SL) even supplies templates to use for doing just that.
there is a scripting language (LSL) native to Second Life. with this you can do any of a myriad of things.. from animating textures to particle effects to automated actions and so much more!
with the use of Poser, you can create your own animations and upload them for your avatar to use. sitting, flying, dancing, anything you can think of.

But... Second Life is more than the sum of it's parts. the community of SL has been touted as one of, if not THE, tightest community of any MMO. i believe this is due to the fact that it's the community that has built almost everything you see in SL. the world is a joint venture between developer and consumer and due to this SL has a very passionate community that has embraced SL as something extremely special. many of us think of SL as the birth-place of the Metaverse, but even more important is building the world together and creating something unique and special.

if you're wondering whether or not you should join Second Life, may i suggest you give the free 7 day trial a try? there's nothing to lose and there's, quite literally, a world to gain.

Feel free to find me and ask questions when you're there...

Sincerely,
Cybin Monde
