Product Description:

Athene is an extremely flexible, multi-platform operating system that is designed for desktop PC's and embedded systems. It can be completely reconfigured to suit the requirements of the target system, as well as the needs of individual users. The user interface is totally rewriteable and is famous for its ability to emulate other interfaces such as the Microsoft Windows and Amiga desktop environments.

Unlike any other operating system, Athene is specially designed to work both as a 'virtual machine' and as a full operating system installation. This has given rise to three different flavours of the software:

  • Athenyx: The commercial distribution of Athene. This high performance release is installed as a new operating system on your computer.
  • Athene for Windows: A smaller 'virtual machine' version for Windows operating systems, available for free. Designed for Windows 98 and later Windows versions.
  • Athene for Linux: For Linux/X11 based operating systems (kernel 2.4+). This release is commonly used as an alternative to desktops like GNOME and KDE. A commercial version of the Athene desktop also exists for people that want to use our graphics technology to replace X11.

Our support for these platforms means that you can download and run software for Athene on the platform that you are most comfortable in using. For developers, it also means that high quality software can be written for multiple platforms without the hassles normally encountered when porting or writing new software products.

What's new in this version:

  • New version of QikInstall now supports package dependencies, a new interface and improved functionality.
  • New version of Uninstall created to support the new QikInstall features.
  • New version of ZTerm developed. Supports multiple consoles, font selection, translucency and background styles, silence and activity alarms, cut and paste operations, and unicode is also supported by default.
  • Added new Stripes class, provides a fast means for drawing line patterns.
  • Added new Divider class, for splitting interfaces into resizable sections.
  • Added new ColourDialog class for standardising the user selection of custom colours.
  • Added new MenuBar class, to simplify the management of menu bars.
  • Added new MixerDialog class, for standardising user manipulation of the audio mixers.
  • Added new FontDialog class, used for asking the user to select fonts.
  • Added new Icon class to assist in the creation and management of desktop icons.
  • Added new Panorama class, provides a scaled down view of the desktop for scrolling to off-screen windows.
  • Added new Dimple class, used for drawing patterns of dots at any size.

A revisit two years later, only to find that this is FreeFakeWare! Now you have to Pay to Play! Shame on VersionTracker (AGAIN!) for allowing a PayWare to be listed as freeware! Pay to download is REQUIRED!

A-hem, Mr. Developer! Multi-platform MEANS that it will run on MORE than one hardware platform! Like Wintel AND Mac. Only being "Intel Pentium II / Compatible CPU or better", is hardly "multi-platform".
