Product Description:

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
Beware, VLC doesn't decode .mov files which use a proprietary codec (such as Sorenson v2), so use QuickTime Player for that.

VLC media player Troubleshooting ReportVLC 9.6 and FLV/MP4/H.264 Problem - Version: 0.9.6, 11/17/2008 02:08PM PST

Wolven Spectre
There were a few bugs in the original build for 0.9.6 that caused problems trying to play .flv or .mp4 files that were using the H.264 Codec. When trying to launch from file association VLC would launch and do nothing. If VLC was already launched and you tried to play the files it would crash the player with a diffrent error message for both. If the logs were checked they would include statements that the system clock was going backwards.

If you download the latest version (it is still 0.9.6, just a newer build) It fixes these issues and many others that have cropped up since the new interface overhaul in 0.9.x. This is expected when ever you do a major overhaul of a program. If it isn't stable and polished enough for you go back to one of the last versions of 0.8.x untill the bugs are worked out.

VLC media player ReviewPrevious version was FAR superior - Version: 0.9.4, 11/1/2008 06:19PM PST

I tried 0.9.4 for a few weeks. I've now uninstalled it and gone back to 0.8.6. I've used VLC as my primary media player for about 4 years.

It simply does not work as well as 0.8.6. It is slower to load from file. DVDs have video interlacing artifacts clearly visible.

The scroll wheel changing the volume is useless and deeply annoying. There is no way of changing this in preferences.

The interface is HORRIFIC. There's an inch of wasted screen to accommodate the comically large buttons. The volume slider is rainbow colored and ugly beyond belief. The play/pause button is huge, it's like a child's toy.

While the 0.8.6 interface looked like a piece of Windows 3.11 shareware, at least it wasn't distracting, and it didn't waste screen space.

Sadly, they also haven't fixed the poor window management in 0.9.4 either. Just once, I'd like to click on the maximize button and it actually maximizes the window. Most often it's at least 3 clicks to get a maximized window.

I can only hope that the next version has a much better interface, is faster, and the retarded mouse volume controls are reverted back to normal -- or at least we have a choice. Otherwise 0.8.6 will be the version I'm sticking with, it's a much better player than 0.9.4
