...Because you keep returning to the sites that install while you aren't loking...!! Ad-Aware SE is a great program and does exactly what it says it will do !! It searches you hard drive - finds the spyware - and lets you get rid of it. It want to keep it from returning - don't return to those sites - or PAY for a more advanced program. LavSoftware has them, too...

Ad-Aware SE ReviewPerfect For What It Does - Version: 1.06r1, 12/20/2006 11:34PM PST

Ad-Aware is an essential tool to have to fall back on. While it won't keep spyware from returning (the best thing for that is a firewall) it will find and destroy anything that is already on your computer. If you have having some problems with spyware, run this and you will be amazed at how well this free program works to weed out the junk from your harddrive!

Ad-Aware SE Commentaryversion downloaded is 1.06 from May 2005 - Version: 1.06r1, 12/7/2006 05:56PM PST

The VT description makes it look like there is a new Ad-Aware. But clicking on the link goes to LavaSoft main website, and their download link then goes to Download.com and downloads the long-standing version 1.06 from May 27, 2005.

So, is this VersionTracker update of a December 2006 release incorrect?
Or, if there is a new release, how and where to get it?

Though, I do see at Lavasoft site that they are offering 15% off their products during Holiday season.

The freeware version of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware is a detection and removal tool, and a rather terrific one at that. It does not keep ad/spyware from coming back because it isn't meant to. It also does not function well as a removal tool on machines that have been infested with thousands of pieces of malware concurrently -- those poor users are much better off extracting whatever data they can from their hard drives, reformatting and starting clean instead of complaining about the heartache of nonexistant false promises.

You need different products for real-time protection, such as Lavasoft's Pro version, Spybot S & D, Microsoft's AntiSpyware (formerly Giant before MS bought them out) or one of about three of the other good guys. You also need to avoid the hundreds (thousands?) of rip-off so-called ad/spyware removers that advertise themselves all over the web, through Google sponsered search results and through spam. They detect false positives in order to goad you into purchasing their defective products, many of which actually cause more problems than they solve. I once watched a colleague test out the pre-purchase version of one of these rip-offs that claimed to have been endorsed by Yahoo and the stupid thing incorrectly detected the Yahoo Toolbar as spyware.

You might even take the drastic step of figuring out what you were doing to get the ad/spyware in the first place and, once it's removed, change your internet behavior accordingly.

Ad-Aware's free version is not perfect, but it's pretty darn close and should be just as an important part of a techie's malware removal kit as an anti-virus program. Anyone who gives it substantially less than all 5's either does not understand what it was supposed to do, has unrealistic expectations of a free product, or is actually a shill working for one of the companies promoting the rip-offs.

I hate spyware! It won't go away. Ad-aware hasn't been able to keep a lot of it off my computer. Why?

Geeze there are an awful lot of web sites that claim to offer free spyware removal software but what they really mean is free spryware detection software - cannot remove it unless you pay $. I don't necessarily object out right to paying for this service - but what happened to truth in advertising? I have a new laptop provide by my work and was trying to tweak some things like having the caps lock key not be a caps lock key (the behavior of which is really frustrating for a mac user) and I downloaded an installer for a small app that happened to be infected - in a matter of seconds - despite enterprise MacAfee running I was infected with about 42 malware, spyware, adware items which MacAfee detected and blocked to some extenct but not completely and did not remove them. Here I am about 4 hours later nearly recovered from the problem and a little bit concerned that there might still be something on my system that should not be or that some of my personal info has been stolen. A recent security update on the Mac OS presents a dialog whenever an application runs on yoru system for the first time asking your permission to let it run - this may not be perfect - especially if you are not in the habit of reading all your dialogs but at least gives you a chance to say I didn't ask a program to run - what's going on.

Don't get sucked into Payware WebRoot Spysweeper, it doens't do any more than Free Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy can do!

This app is great. The freeware version is not crippled. Reference file updates appear frequently to combat new spyware. I sound like a commercial because I am a satisfied user.

I do not understand the comment trashing this app. I have used it for years(started using it on Windows 95), with nothing but excellent results. I use both the free and pay versions, and have it running on over thirty systems. I've had no need for tech support, but the one time I emailed with a question about other platform support, they were responsive. Lavasoft was a pioneer in anti-spyware, and they have remained dedicated to the concept of eliminating the problem in ways that will make software such as ad-aware obsolete. How many of the other vendors can say that?
