McAfee VirusScan Definition - 5813

I can not register my VirusScan Plus product. This laptop came with a free 6 month subscription to McAfee which I allowed to lapse because I found a cheaper McAfee VirusScan Plus CD from a local computer store and loaded it on, I believe the CD deleted the other product prior to installing the new version. The program realizes that I had had a McAfee product but fails during the registration process after it says that it sees the former product and will use that product registration.

I once saw a script that searched the registry (I'm guessing)
that found the PC's current Virus Definition.

Does anyone have a script that will run (in dos window)that can find a user's definition number? this will run on login from a script window

pushed 4640 out to our users on win95 and having logon problems similar to those found about a year ago with much earlier DAT. BSDs and black screens happening when DAT first loads and then during subsequent boots when it tries to read boot files.
Any feedback welcome.

this dat update was applied, a 98SE computer would freeze on Windows splash screen. Issued tracked back to scan of boot sectors during startup. On step by step startup I found the boot sector scan would complete however Windows would freeze when loading drivers. Despite several helpful chats with McAfee techs the only workaround I found was to boot in Safe Mode and rem out the two relevant lines in autoexec.bat for boot sector scanning. Only downside to support from McAfee was that they weren't prepared to escalate the issue. I suspect we'll see an update or patch shortly.

Clinic up to Sept 2002 since XP loaded can only use the virus scan element of clinic and that frequently fail to completely down load (used to use AVG and that was no problem updating). Have been updating McAfee with the patch via Version Tracker. Always a bit of a problem getting rid of the old .dat file - have to make sure in Task Manager that every McAfee app is closed.
