If you are not happy with this application try Audio Recorder. It's freeware and I'm very happy using it.

Sound Recorder Reviewnice app - Version: 1.1, 11/25/2006 01:14PM PST

Simple, nice and working.

Only drawback: the storage during recording does not take place in the final format. The intermediate file becomes really huge when recording a meeting. 3 hours = 12 GB. Because of the data transfer the fan sometimes starts on my Powerbook which creates background noise.

It would be even better when it could immediately do the encoding to mp3.

Sound Recorder ReviewGreat customer support!!! - Version: 1.1, 11/1/2005 02:02PM PST

I was looking for a product that would allow me to copy audiotapes onto my computer to use in PowerPoint presentations. I was told this program was the way to go, and I can attest that it does work. It is not a program that has lots of bells and whistles, but it does EXACTLY what I want it to do! While the program does not have a help feature, the developer is accessible by email and responded to me within 24 hours. I was using the program but not going to the file menu to stop recording, I was just closing the program when the recording was complete. Turns out if you do NOT stop recording the file is unusable. The developer explained this to me without making me feel like a total cretin! :-)

Sound Recorder ReviewDoes what it says - Version: 1.1, 10/4/2003 05:04AM PST

This is a no frills recorder that simply works. It will save the recorded sound as a Quicktime movie file. Once saved, you can easily download the free MP3-to-AIFF app that will take the Quicktime movie file (and just about any other kind of audio) and convert it to AIF. Some things in life are free.

Sound Recorder ReviewSimple and good - Version: 1.1, 6/12/2003 10:58AM PST

The visual output could be more like in Audio In (see VT for that), but this one has options for compression and sample-rate. I prefer buttons to record, but hey it's a cool nice and free app! Thanks!

Sound Recorder Usage TipConversion from QuickTime - Version: 1.1, 6/12/2003 08:34AM PST

Valrus
You can use the freeware program "SparkME" to convert the sound in a Quicktime movie file to either .aiff or .wav. From there it's just a hop, skip and a jump to .mp3 or virtually any other format.

I was looking for a native Mac OS X program (I'm using 10.2.6) to record some songs from cassette tapes and vinyl disks. Sound Recorder is basic — absolutely no bells or whistles — but it is stable and has just enough controls to get the job done. It creates a 44mhz Quicktime movie file.

I think Quicktime Pro or a similar program is needed if you need to convert the file to, say, AIF or MP3. This is only v.1.0, but it's a good start. And you can't beat the price!
