Yellow Dog Linux ReviewSeems bloated and cubersome - Version: 5.0.1, 4/30/2007 01:21AM PST

Was really looking forward to it for weeks now, finally got it, backed up all my stuff, installed it, tried it, and disliked it. Sorry to say, my negative experience started when I didnt have enough privelages to access my hard drives. Logged in as root and still didnt have enough privelages. As root user I didnt have enough privelages to change privelages, sigh. logging out after fresh install with non root account was full of glitches where the os told me that some programs were not shutting down and had to force log out. Gave it several more chances to impress me, seems very graphically bloated in all the wrong places, after clicking on the question mark for help and nothing happened, reformatted and installed mac os x again. too bad, was really looking forward to it.

Yellow Dog Linux ReviewThe best version of Yellow Dog Linux yet! - Version: 5.0.1, 4/28/2007 04:40PM PST

I love YDL 3.0 on my old 3400c PowerBook, but was not the biggest fan of 4.1 and switched to Ubuntu for a while, but once Yellow Dog Linux 4.1 came out I switched back and was happy as a clam. YDL 5.0.1 really seems more modern and a much better release. Linux is different and can be hard, but please be sure to use the forum, the mailing lists, and the online help. There is even a book you can buy from Terra Soft Solution! Give it a full 2 weeks to try it out using the numerous support options available and you too will most likely fall in love with this free OS called Yellow Dog Linux.

Strong rumours say that most PowerPC Apple Macinstosh Computers will not be supported after Mac OS X 10.5, so this is the future for all PPC Mac owners.

Yellow Dog Linux ReviewNot for iMac - Version: 5.0.1, 4/28/2007 10:58AM PST

I installed YDL 5.0.1 on my G5 iMac (10.4). Yes, it works, but its very cumbersome. Maybe I just need to get used to a different operating system, but NOTHING is straightforward. Even finding and installing software is difficult. I was going to leave it on my machine just to play with it, but its killing me. Not long after coming out of yaboot (allows you to select between OSX, YDL, CD for boot) the cooling fans come on full blast and stay on full blast for as long as I'm in YDL. I couldn't stand it and removed it all.

Yellow Dog Linux CommentaryWhy not use Fink for free (can also install KDE, GNOME, etc.) - Version: 4.1, 3/24/2006 02:59PM PST

This is not a slam of Yellow Dog Linux but rather a question. With Fink (http://fink.sourceforge.net) you can install these same programs using Apple's X11. With FinkCommander (http://finkcommander.sourceforge.net) you can install and update it all from a GUI to avoid using Terminal. If you download the free Apple Developer Kit you can even compile and install the beta versions of the Unix software.

What does Yellow Dog Linux do/have that Fink does not? I have installed Gnome, and am now using the latest version of KDE. I've also added a few custom Unix aplications for my kids to use for school. What else would this application give me?

Yellow Dog Linux Usage TipWhy bother? - Version: 4.1, 3/24/2006 10:00AM PST

Your Reason 4 Living
Maybe this sounds harsh, but why would you bother Purchasing/DL'ing YDL, when not only do Ubuntu send you out free CDs (I can vouch for it - they sent me 2 CD sets each for x86 and PPC), if you really have your heart set on installing a Fedora Core-based distro, you can download... er... Fedora Core PPC?

Yellow Dog Linux CommentaryLinux Tab - Version: 4.0.1, 4/20/2005 04:00AM PST

I agree that Yellow Dog Linux does not belong here, but that we really do need a separate category for Unix/Linux/X11/POSIX applications. Currently, the only thing out there is SourceForge, and it is completely inadequate for the average end-user. VersionTracker could fill a major gap that is not and may never be addressed by SourceForge. Heck, if you wanted to think big, maybe the folks at TechTracker could consider collaborating on a joint project with the folks at SourceForge, to bring a truly comprehensive software tracking system to the world of Free and Open Source software and *nix. This is a niche just waiting to be filled. TechTracker certainly has the right ideas in terms of design and SourceForge has the infrastructure in place already, so lets get going.

Yellow Dog Linux CommentaryThis is Linux, not Mac OS X - Version: 4.0.1, 3/6/2005 08:44PM PST

What does Yellow Dog Linux have to do with Mac OS X? Linux doesn't run on Mac OS X. I use VersionTracker because it shows me information specific to the operating system that I use. I don't use Linux. I don't use Windows. I use the Mac OS X and the underlying Darwin OS. If VersionTracker is simply an advertising forum for software makers that definitely lessens the value of it.

I think it would be a great thing if VersionTracker were to add a Linux tab. Linux is at least as relevant as Palm OS, more so in my opinion.

Well, surprising as it may be, it's actually true. Ubuntu does offer free CDs (i386, AMD64 and PPC versions). More info at http://shipit.ubuntulinux.org/

I tried YDL 3.x and I found it lacking in of community support, installation and packages. I replaced it with Debian and never looked back.

No company or entity can afford to manufacture and ship CD's "for free." Get a grip.

In the meantime, YDL is a very nice Linux distro for Macintosh.

Yellow Dog Linux ReviewWhere is the support for sound on G5 - Version: 4.0.1, 3/6/2005 12:28PM PST

It's been almost 2 Years since G5's were released, still no support for audio. This sucks so much, YDL used to be my favorite not anymore.
