Corel declare KnockOut has incompatibilities with Tiger - Version: SP1, 9/22/2005 06:26PM PST

I've tried to use KnockOut 2 as a PS CS plugin, but find it won't add to selection beyond a certain point - which is INCREDIBLY frustrating, and a total waste of time. I asked for support on several occasions, and after waiting a week (as opposed to their 1 business day claim), got this response, and they marked my support issue as 'Solved'. I'm now after a refund as it's not fit for the purpose it was sold.
Corel has received sporadic reports of a functionality issue with KnockOut 2.0 while running on MAC OS 10.4. Our investigation indicates that the issue may be specific to certain hardware/software configurations, however the problem is not reproducible in testing. There is currently no technical workaround to resolve this issue, however our technical support department continues to investigate the phenomenon. When a resolution becomes available, Corel will publish a relevant document in our online knowledgebase (http://support.corel.com).

Corel KnockOut 2 - Version: SP1, 4/1/2005 07:53PM PST

I installed Corel Painter IX TBYB on my OS X 10.3.8 system. I then installed Corel KnockOut 2 (2.77 with 2.0c plug in.)
I set permissions to read/write for both folders and their contents.
I was able to repeatedly open photos in Painter, use the KnockOut plug in (which transfers the working layer to the KnockOut application,) process and apply - over and over and over. (The only bug I noticed was if I accidentally selected Quit from within KnockOut when it had been launched from the Plug in via Painter it would generate the "Unexpectedly quit" message. No biggee although it does make me wonder why the Quit option is there.
Next I downloaded this update titled Corel KnockOut 2.0 Update. It updated my version 2.77 application to 2.88.The plug in remains 2.0c. Upon launching Corel Painter IX again and attempting to use KnockOut, not much happened. Blue & white beachball cursor appeared. The program seemed frozen. Manually launched the KnockOut 2 application and my working layer appeared. I was able to edit but Corel Painter never regained its composure after the blue & white cursor had appeared - KnockOut was running but Painter appeared to be frozen. I quit both. I found and trashed all the KnockOut preferences & the application and plug in (and a temp folder in / which may have been Painter.) I also trashed the Painter prefs.
I reinstalled KnockOut 2.77 again. And it works again. Repeatedly, without restarting.

Knockout works with 10.3.8 - Version: SP1, 2/16/2005 08:37PM PST

I just upgraded to 10.3.8 and Knockout works perfectly! This is absolutely the best masking program for situations when borders are not very distinct, like hair and fur, or dendrites of a neuron. It is also excellent for any situation where the forground and background colors are different in different sections of an image. You draw a the boundry between the foreground and background, so it doesn't have to use the same foreground and background colors for the entire image. For images where the figure is defined by color or sharp borders, I prefer Extensis Mask Pro, which is extremely fast and I think a little easier to use.

I've messed around with this program for several days. It simply either does not run, or does not apply the outline. Worthless.
running mac 0s 10.3.7 and Photoshop CS on a Mac.
If you a Mac user, stay AWAY from this piece of crap. Does not work as advertised. What a waste of money.

Refund coming - Version: SP1, 12/3/2004 11:36PM PST
Madam Web
I wrote Corel a letter requesting a refund of the cost of the software and tech support on the grounds that Knockout was purported to work with all versions of OSX when it did not. Today a very nice person from Corel called me. She will send an RMA number and I will get my refund when I return the CD to them.
If anyone from Corel is out there listening - please update the product and I'll gladly buy another copy.

Not compatible with OS 10.3.5 or 10.3.6 - Version: SP1, 11/16/2004 02:52PM PST
Madam Web
I installed this program and used it with no problems with 10.3.5 and Photoshop CS for 7 weeks.
When it works, Knockout is a wonderful program - I highly recommend it for situations where the background and foreground are similar in color, or for "transparent" images and shadows.
Then one day it just quit working. Every time I tried to use it I got the message "Error Invoking Knockout". I tried trashing the program and preference files and reinstalling, installing into another program (Painter 8), installing onto a different computer, and logging in as a different user on my computer. None of these things worked. After 10 days working with one of Corel's tech reps by email, I was told that my problem required too much interaction to be handled by email. I should call technical support, which I did for $25. The result of the phone call was the telephone tech rep looking up a reference and then telling me that Knockout 2 is not compatible with either OS 10.3.5 or 10.3.6. Furthermore, he found nothing about any plans to correct the problem.
If this incompatibility is corrected, I would highly recommend the product. As things stand now, it is useless.

You must be adivised that although this product works exactly as advertised (I had no problems installing, although they could be a bit more clear in their instructions) I found the hard way after wasting a whole day screwing with it that there is a fundamental conflict with OS 10.3.X. I only found it out after demanding a free tech support phone call (and raising hell to get it) that THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE at Corel, and they have no plans to fix it. The trouble is that you must restart the machine after processing an image in order to process another one. Yes, it works perfect on the first image per restart, but on the second image you try to process, you can attemp to apply the results to the host (Photoshop Elements 2) and nothing happens. All your work on masking the image is just gone. Restart the machine, try it again, and it works fine—for one image only. So, I am ambivalent; it works great if you don’t mind rebooting per image

work with PS7 you must use the Updater with . This requires you have the original retail Knockout 2 CD. You can't simply copy the app to a CD as the original has invisable files that can not be copied. So break down and buy the program if you want it. P.S. works great
