There are three relatively easy and free options for obtaining The GIMP:

1. The Fink package manager has version 2.0.6.

2. The DarwinPorts package manager has version 2.2.7.

3. The precompiled binary known as Gimp.app is version 2.2.6.

You can find all three by searching on VT.

There seems to be another compiled binary, http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/, open source.

That's the "source code" level.
GIMP-app is v2.2.0.

At the moment, gimp-app version 2.2.1 is absent from
ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/g/gi/gimp-app

GIMP CommentaryYou don't need this, use GIMP-app for OS X - Version: 2.2.1, 1/2/2005 04:14PM PST

This may be fine for geeks to play with, but if you as a Mac or WIN user just want the GIMP application already compiled into a binary installer, go to the SourceForge FTP servers:

ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/g/gi/gimp-app

and

ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/g/gi/gimp-win

Here is the link to find The GIMP for OS X:

The GIMP for OS X

From there you can reach the two *best* solutions, either the precompiled Gimp.app or a source install via Fink. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to manually compile any of the open source software available for OS X. Either someone has provided a binary, or you can find the package via Fink. In fact, everyone should have the OS X Developer Tools and Fink installed, so that you can easily take advantage of all the great software that is available for BSD Unix systems like OS X. This is truly a no brainer.

If you go to

ftp://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/pub/sourceforge/g/gi/gimp-app

you can see the Gimp-2.0.0.img, but when you try to download it, it says permission denied. Anybody know why? I've tried with the Finder and with Fetch.

There is no reason to use this package at all. Go get Gimp.app for free. It requires NO knowledge of the terminal; it's a drag-and-drop installable .app bundle and it works right out of the "box."
