Product Description:

SilverFast SE is a powerful solution from LaserSoft Imaging which combines the best of both worlds: high-end imaging technology for low-end digital scanners for a very low cost. SilverFast SE is designed to work with most of the Epson scanners.

Images will especially benefit from SilverFast's intelligent auto-adjust and LAB-based unsharp-masking, which does not sharpen the color noise of single channels, hence avoiding the extra noise. In addition as special Multi-Sampling function is reducing the noise in dark areas of the scan. There are many of the marvelous highlights of the full SilverFast Ai, such as:

Real-time correction
Auto-adjust with artificial intelligence
Professional unsharp masking
Color-cast removal slider
Simple selective color correction
RGB-TIFF and JPEG output formats

SilverFast SE's ScanPilot guides the novice user through the optimum steps for brilliant images. SilverFast can also be upgraded to SilverFast Ai Standard with SilverFast IT8-Calibration and JobManagement. This allows batch correction and processing on the fly.

I concur with other comments that the interface is extremely cumbersome. It is a good program but the interface is the weakest part. It also cannot save files as JPEG that is readable by most programs (Preview included). The program installation fails to follow Mac standards and sticks a file in the root directory of the hard drive, and will modify your dock without asking. The developer knows this but chooses not to change it, which is an arrogance that makes the product less appealing. At higher scan resolutions (48-bit) many of the options disappear--something not mentioned in the documentation.

In short, it is a good program that takes a lot of trial and error to figure out. It is invasive of you system, so check for files after installation. Use TIFF for maximum compatibility with other programs.

Silverfast is an incredibly powerful piece of coding. It is unparalleled in functionality and yields great results.

Sadly the developer has neglected the interface. The non-standard user interface is very clunky, and needs a Human interface lift.

Although I miss the batch scanning capabilities of Epson's software, this is a tremendously reliable and powerful piece of kit that complements my Perfection 4870 wonderfully.
