Product Description:

TubeSock grabs YouTube videos from the web and copies them to your video iPod, Mac, or PlayStation Portable. You can preview the videos in TubeSock directly. TubeSock knows how to convert video using the codecs and bitrates best for each device. It can even add the video to iTunes for you. Includes easy integration with Safari and Firefox. Until you register, converted videos are limited to 30 seconds.

What's new in this version:

TubeSock 3.0 has advanced to beta 19 (download TubeSock 3.0 beta 19 here!) and it fixes the crash on PowerPC / Tiger Macs in beta 18. Yes, we finally got our dead PowerBook G4 up and running, and after a seriously large amount of tediousness, we found the bug. It was in the new code that displays the FPS counter. Apparently the conversion can be slow enough on PowerPC that it exposed a condition where the buffer containing the FPS could be empty. The code has been re-written in a much more defensive manner, so a null this or a nil that won't crash anything.

A few other fixes made their way in: fixes to a site that made a recent change, a rare condition where the output name could match the input name and overwrite the input file, and some more general interface tweaking.

TubeSock Usage TipUsing tubesock - Version: 3.0b19, 1/13/2009 10:05PM PST

I downloaded the Beta version of tubesock so I could capture a 7 minute video clip from Playmotion. The download went OK but there was now user info on how to capture video from the net. Realizing I had a freebie for 30 seconds of video, I kept trying to capture the video clip but nothing was showing up on my hard drive in "movies". I sent an email to the developer 3 days ago and have heard nothing. By fooling around a little, I found out I have to click the save command and wait for the app to download all the video, then convert it, and chop off all but 30 seconds worth. The 30 second video resulted in a 1MB file which played OK. I'm tempted to register and cough up the $15 but I'm leery. I give this a Yes, with reservations concerning the lack of technical response. Also, I'd like to know what else is out there to capture video on an iMac running OSX Leopard 10.5.5.

Used to be a good program. Now every time I try to convert a YouTube file it is missing even though I just viewed it.

TubeSock ReviewThis Version works Great! - Version: 3.0b19, 11/18/2008 03:08PM PST

I have been using TubeSock since 2006. Indeed it did stop working in version 2 recently due to changes made by youtube.com. So I came here and downloaded version 3 and not only does it work great, so far there is no converting needed! Files (so far) are saved straight as .mp4 so it's actually better than before. I think it was the iPhone that initiated the conversion of h264/mp4 in youtube. Whatever the naysayers are saying here doesn't apply anymore at least. Granted the support is not exactly pro-active on letting you know all of this in the product update but it is mentioned on their website.
