Sophos Anti-Virus Usage TipA couple of bugs to watch out for - Version: 7.1.0, 11/2/2009 08:49AM PST

We've had a site-license for Sophos for years now. There are a couple of things about 7.1 to watch out for:

1) Minor thing -- when you "Scan My Mac" -- the log will report "corrupt files" for any *alias* on your hard disk. Sophos said this will eventually be fixed.

2) If you use Retrospect to back up client machines -- be aware that having Sophos 7's "on access scanner" active will add a *lot* more time to the "scanning" of your client computers prior to backup. In some cases -- on client machines with a lot of files -- it adds over an hour to the scan of the computer prior to backup. Backup speeds are about the same.

This has also been escalated to both EMC and Sophos (and the fault is Sophos, IMO as Sophos 4.9 did not have this issue...) with no resolution as yet.

I can't say that there would be the same issue with any other backup software out there, though...

Sophos Anti-Virus ReviewSo far - not impressed - Version: 7.1.0, 11/2/2009 06:35AM PST

I just installed this and after figuring out that the download installs another installer that must be run I got it working.

First Scan so far detected over 2.4 million files - in the first two hours of scanning it has processed somewhere around 5,000 of those files - meaning that it should be done scanning the first time through in about a month or so.

In the first couple hours it has encountered 9 errors - all of a type unrecognized file format or corrupt file - the files which it has listed as unrecognized or corrupt are of the following types:

.gz
.sit
.dmg
.cab
.rar
.app ( Firefox.app )

granted a couple of them are Windows files - but they are on an external hard drive - and I do not see anyway to tell the app to scan only the internal hard drive - I think I downloaded the Mac only version of the software - however, at least half of those files are Mac OS files.

Since I started typing this message the scanner has picked up and is processing files faster than before - almost 40,000 scanned now - so maybe it will only take a week rather than a month to complete one scan.

Let me know when you find a virus in the wild on a Mac. Big waste of money.

I have been very happy with version 4.9.
My only complaints are that there is no scheduled scanning (unless you run a cron job from the CLI) and the Enterprise Console does not serve Macs like it serves Windows.
Nitpics are the aesthetics, and the some of the terminology they use to define cleaning, protecting, and quarantining.
The aesthetics and terminology are smartly addressed in version 7, but they still failed to add scheduled scanning.
Also in version 7 the enterprise console still can't do what it does for PCs, not that I really care.
More of pain is the fact that they will be discontinuing support for 4.9 on 12/31/09 and version 7 does not support OS 10.2 or 10.3.
I have only been using version 7.02 for one day, and it seems to work fine.
Despite the criticism, I think it is the best anti virus for Mac!
The review stars are for version 4.9, version 7.02 would get another star for "Ease of Use", "Documentation", and "Features" "

Why did this jump from 3.93 to 4.8? Seems weird. Explanations, anybody?

After evaluating this software I arranged for a 10 user license for my company. We have a mix of Mac and PC and the cross platform aspect of this product was very appealing. I will state briefly that this software detected viruses missed by the "biggest name" AV offering and uses far less resources. Now back to Mac. After downloading the EICAR test virus and hiding it in what I thought were clever locations Sophos found it 100% of the time. So the software works. And because I DO NOT WANT any malware garbage on my Macs I will continue to pay for and use a product that many feel is uneccessary. I feel the same way about car insurance. I know I will never have an accident. And I know that there are no malcontents with skills so great that our platform will ever be threatened. Right. I believe its coming, and Apple may have cracked the door themselves with the compatibility apps on the Intel machines. I also believe that I have a responsibilty to not propagate or facilitate the spread of malware. Lastly, with so many in our community opposed to AV products is it any wonder that most of what is offered to us is dubious. Sophos offers a competent product to the enterprise or small business environment. It probably isn't much of a reach to imagine they could offer a desktop variant with little effort. But who wants a client base that begins with resentment and suspicion?

I downloaded this product because i wanted to see whether, through my Virtual PC software, I had contracted the Sober worm. The software was easy to install. However: 1. I ran it perhaps four times, and each time it crashed on a nearly pristine OS 10.4.1 installation. I called tech support. They were reasonably easy to reach, and made some suggestions that I followed; but no matter: the thing kept crashing. That is unacceptable. 2. The user interface is very poor. The suggestions that the tech support person made should have been obvious from the software. They were not at all obvious. 3. The user interface is derived from the Classic world, not the OS X world. I've never used Classic. I have no interest in using it. It scares me. This app should be native OS X, and should have an OS X look and feel. 4. Help did not work at all. In short: stay away from this piece of garbage.

Sophos Anti-Virus CommentaryIt is not true, there are virus... - Version: 3.93, 5/18/2005 07:38AM PST

Thanks for the download, found a virus:
Just installed Tiger on iBook and I found a virus with this software!
"Virus: 'Mac/Cowhand-A' detected in Ray:Users:me:Library:Preferences:Apple Motion 1.0 SN GENER#153A4
Disinfection not available for this virus"
Sorry, but no desinfection possible, I just deleted it...
My wish would be a more Apple like interface and more info in the report file (e.g. Virus Alert!, and Virus succesfully deleted...)
Otherwise works fine for me.

First, just because there are no viruses for Mac OS X does not mean that no one should run this. For a home machine, it is a bit silly. For a business that receives files from everywhere, you should have a good virus software. Sophos is so much nicer than Norton or Virex that I hope they continue to support the Mac platform. I only wish that people would use the commentary option instead of rating the software when they want to make dumb comments. It is good software than can help a Mac user collect a ton of PC viruses and be thankful that they do not affect their machine.
