Microsoft Expression Media CommentaryStill the best but still needs improvement - Version: 2.0.2096.0, 11/22/2009 11:40AM PST

elandy
Use onMAC - I have used Expression Media (Used to be called Iview Media Pro) since years and despite numerous issues and flaws, there is NOTHING like it to keep track of and manipulate media files. I use it primarily for image files. I have thousands of image files and this is the only way I could keep track of them, send them out, change names, sizes, etc. easily. On the other hand, since Microsoft bought it, VERY LITTLE has been done for it and it needs a lot of help now. They have fixed some serious bugs, but there are still others. I have learned to put up with them and hope they still develop this app. If there were another out there that did the same stuff or near it, I would use it, but there are none. This is a VERY configurable app. If anyone knows of any other that comes close, PLEASE let me know as the bugs in it have gone unfixed for a year now. I am writing this to counter other neg reviews I have read. Yes, its a drag but what else is there? Apeture is not close.

Microsoft Expression Media CommentaryMicrosoft sucks - Version: 3.1.3, 10/31/2009 08:41PM PST

This is exactly why I hate Microsoft. They march in and buy companies that produce tools for Mac users and then discontinue it for Mac. What absolute SCUM.

They did the exact same thing with Connectix Virtual PC for Mac. MicroScum.

Microsoft Expression Media ReviewSame old, same old - Version: 2.0.2096.0, 8/2/2009 07:49AM PST

Still a compulsory splash screen on startup. Still frequent and mysterious disappearance of the view preferences.

Another pet peeve: Accidentally clicking outside an image boundary can lose all of the selection frames. Grossly annoying if I am near the end of a four-figure catalog.

Sorry I came back for a quick inspection to see if they have improved what was a good product before they bought it. Nope.

Microsoft Expression Media CommentaryBeware of Catalog Limitations - Version: 2.0.2096.0, 6/3/2009 07:52PM PST

The most glaring problem of Expression is the catalog size is still limited to 1.8GB or 128,000 files, despite more than a year of complaints from users. The support boards are full of comments pleading with MS to remedy this problem to no avail.

Here's a response post from head of MS Media Expression Support:

"The Expression Media development team is painfully aware that the limits imposed by the current file format are insufficient, particularly in this day of larger and larger media files. Dev is committed to improving on this in the future." - September 23, 2008

I would highly recommend checking the Microsoft Expression Media support boards to see if the problem has been addressed before purchasing this product.

VT is way behind, as is often the case. This update was released on 24-Feb-2009. And here's the KB article on it if anyone would like to read more about the update:

Microsoft Expression Media CommentaryCould Not Resist - Version: 2.0.2096.0, 6/2/2009 07:32AM PST

What's new in this version:
Importing a number of large images is very slow.
XML export and import may scramble custom fields.

Is MS saying they fixed these issues or created these problems for the update...?

Separately, MS updater for the program does not currently recognize update is available...I guess that may change later on....

Microsoft Expression Media CommentaryAnd you have to love the scribes at MS... - Version: 2.0.1477.0, 1/22/2009 10:13PM PST

It's been a very long time since MS changed the name of this app. Yet their product description above still reads "MediaPro supports more than 100 different file formats..."

Is anyone still awake at MS?

Microsoft Expression Media ReviewI've found yet another serious defect - Version: 2.0.1477.0, 1/22/2009 10:10PM PST

I support every bad thing spoken about this piece of sh!t. iView MediaPro was pretty good. As soon as Microshaft took it over, it turned to dust.

Despite widespread dislike for splash screens at startup, one was introduced to this app as soon as MC could do it.

Thank goodness they did not insist, as they do with Word, on the creation of a new, blank window on launch.

But I have discovered something else that probably amounts to a serious bug — from time to time it will corrupt something somewhere, forcing a re-boot of the computer. And, on re=boot, Expression Media has lost its viewing preferences. Same old boring gray staring back at me.

It's not even as if the viewing prefs are easy to set. Sometimes the icon is grayed out and you are forced to use the menu item. And even then, you are clicking several times to achieve what should be something simple. Save as default? Yeah right. Next crash, it's fade-to-gray again.

Is anyone still alive over at MS?

I've been tying all day to produce a catalog of only 3544 images. Hopeless! This thing chugs to a halt, coughs and gives up. A horrible piece of shyte by a company well-known for same. Please someone come up with a viable alternative. There is a need for a catalog tool and, as far as I know, there isn't a good one out there.

I have called ms support to register this product 6 times, get "call cannot be completed" each time. I cannot get the serial num from the volume licensing site.

This was such a great product, used it since the beginning, too bad MS ruined it. They even had good support before.

dont waste your time. I will look into something else.
