Scientific Journal Information CommentaryWrong Version Number - Version: 3.3.1, 9/8/2005 09:58AM PST

Would the developer please correct the fact that the program still reports itself as version 3.1 instead of version 3.3.1. He seems to have been a bit lazy about making sure that the internal version numbering gets updated when he compiles a new version of the program. This is messing up software tracking programs such as VersionTracker Pro.

Mucho gracias. The data in the lower part of the window (min, max and expected values, etc.) is a bit messy and there is no option to choose what we want to see. Nonetheless, a great utility ........

Whenever a scientist needs to submit a paper for publication, a prime question is which is the best one (in terms of prestige and getting read). There is nothing more depressing than spending years on a study that no one ever sees. ISI is a measure for how good a journal is by measuring how many times an average article in the journal is cited by another article a year. There are a lot of issues with this measure but at least it lets you know folks are reading the journal. It is calculated and sold by a private company. Typically you have to go to the library and check out either a book or a CD-ROM to access the information. This program has packaged the data for ready access. As the author has noted on his website, you therefore need to be at an institution where you have legal access to the information to not be violating copyright. If this is the case, then you will find this software to be quite a time saver. It's a fairly barebones application and has some odd aspects (clicking on a journal causes it to be centered on the list. Also, I find that it is buggy in that it is the journal right below the one that you click on that is selected. Not a big deal since you can navigate with the arrow keys or the mouse wheel) but it gets the job done! Note that it only covers the biological index, not the social sciences index.
