Product Description:

Thoth is a newsreader from the author of YA-NewsWatcher. Thoth starts out with the many useful features of YA-NW and further enhances and builds upon them to include an attractive user interface, power-user preferences, automatic FAQ retrieval, queued article and header downloads, quoted text coloring, reference-based article threading (with a handy view of the thread available while you're reading its posts), multi-threaded connection to the news server (up to 4 connections), sophisticated filtering with regex support, comprehensive multiple character set support, binary posting and built-in binary viewing, finely integrated support for multiple news servers - and hundreds of other small features too numerous to mention here.

What's new in this version:

Added the countfailedtransfers and retryfailedtransfers custom apple events to allow scripted retrial of failed transfers (due to connection problems, etc.)
Added total remaining download byte count to Queued Transfers List status text.
A new "Statistics" pane in the "News Server Settings" dialog shows the approximate number of bytes sent and received to the news server.
Revised all file i/o routines to use newer Fork style routines under OS X.
Created a separate OS-X only, bundled Mach-O version of the Thoth application in the hope it minimizes the various OS X file and thread related bugs that plague dual CPU machines in particular.
Again changed how unique filenames are created when auto-saving (such as when decoding an attachment) a file whose name duplicates an existing file in the same folder. Under OS 8 and 9, a suffix of "*02", "*03", ... is added to the original file name to make it unique. Under OS X the file extension is preserved, and the "*02", "*03", ... is added to the filename prior to the extension. So under OS 8/9, downloading the file "image.jpg" three times would create names of "image.jpg", "image.jpg*02", and "image.jpg*03". Under OS X the names would be "image.jpg", "image*02.jpg", and "image*03.jpg". These changes preserve the file extension that OS X programs may need to identify the file type while creating duplicate filenames that stand out more from normal filenames, making it easier for the user to spot and deal with the duplicates.
When saving a new personality, the default personality name "Default" is now suggested as the personality name when saving if no default personality has yet been defined.

Am about to finally upgrade to Leopard and a new Intel Mac, so I'm really glad to hear that my favorite newsreader has a version updated for that system. I really appreciate the continued updates.

...saw I bought this in early 2002 for $25.00.

Regardless, Brian has been supporting this application for more years than than and I've had use of the best Mac newsreader for more than 7 years for only $25. I just sent him another $25 because Thoth is worth it, and maybe 1.9 will appear for real. I understand burnout... rather than criticism, I'd rather pass on encouragement.

... since the developer first released Thoth 1.8.4 more than a year ago. That's right, not even a point upgrade in more than a year. And still no Universal Binary.
I'm a registered user who used to recommend Thoth, but the developer doesn't seem to care about it any more. So paying for this app at this time just doesn't strike me as a smart use of funds.
The freeware MT-Newswatcher is almost as good as Thoth, and the shareware app Unison has left it in the dust.
