Product Description:

Thoth is a Usenet newsreader application for Macintosh. Its features include automatic viewing of downloaded images, binary posting, flexible article filtering (kill files) and sorting, reference-based threading, and comprehensive multiple character set support for reading and posting in non-English language and non-Latin alphabet newsgroups. It can be used both as an online and offline newsreader.

What's new in this version:

  • Thoth now remembers the preferred height of the thread list in article windows. The default height is 5 items tall. Dragging the divider works as before to change the list height. Option-dragging sets the preferred height to the value you select.
  • Article list windows are now always created with a horizontal scrollbar. It is now also possible to change the width of most columns by dragging the divider at the right edge of the column label button. If the option key is held down, all the current column width settings will be remembered and used the next time the article list window for the newsgroup is opened, otherwise the new column widths are temporary. Holding down the shift key while drag-resizing a column will cause all the columns to be reset to their automatically calculated widths. This too will be a temporary change unless the option key is also held down, in which case any custom column width settings for the newsgroup will be deleted. By holding down the shift, option, and command keys while drag resizing will delete the custom column width settings for all newsgroups.
  • The maximum subject width and maximum author width article list prefs settings are now also newsgroup settings so that they can be adjusted on a newsgroup by newsgroup or newsgroup hierarchy basis.
  • Changed how newsgroup settings are associated with article list windows. Previously if there was no newsgroup setting applied to an article list window (meaning the general preferences settings would be used), the "Edit Newsgroup Setting" command was disabled so that the article and message settings could not be edited for just that window. Now the "Edit Newsgroup Setting" command is always available, allowing on the fly customization of article and message window settings for an article list window, and the "Edit Newsgroup Setting" dialog shows the name of the newsgroup setting that was applied to the article list window, or "Default." To emphasize that the article list window's private copy of the newsgroup settings are being edited, and not the master copy that would be edited via the "Newsgroup Settings" dialog, the settings name is shown in parenthesis.
  • Items in the Preferences dialog that are overridden by a newsgroup setting or a personality are now marked with a '
  • ' and a diamond respectively.
  • Added a filtering preference to enable detection of fake (1/1) binary posts when applying line count based filters.
  • When showing the "Download Information" for multiple selected failed or canceled queued transfers from the queued transfers list, it's now possible to check the "Resume Interrupted Download" checkbox, making it easy to use the dialog to resume and rest to pending multiple interrupted downloads at once.
  • A Windows-1252 charset translation table written by Jari Lehtonen is now available (added to "Extra Translators" folder in distribution archive -- drag it to your "Thoth Translators" folder to use it).
  • Sorting an article list window by author now sorts according to the last rather than the first name of the author.
  • Holding down the option key when the mouse is over a truncated subject or author in an article list window or over truncated text in the queued transfers list window now forces the display of a help tag window with a longer version of the text even if the preference to show such truncated text help tags is unchecked.
  • QuickTime 5 is buggy and crashes when decoding JPEG images. So the IJG JPEG decoder is now always used when displaying JPEG images, and the checkbox to enable the IJG JPEG decoder in the "Viewing Images" prefs panel has been removed since this option is now always on. Bugs in QuickTime could still cause problems with image catalog windows and non-JPEG images (GIF, TIFF, etc.)
  • When changing the magnification of an image window via the selection method, holding down the option key will demagnify the image.
  • Worked around an OS X bug that prevented proper date/time formatting in article list windows in some cases.
  • Fixed a bug in setting the magnification for an image via the selection method if the window had been resized larger than the displayed image.
  • Revamped the work-arounds used for various OS X appearance related bugs to work better with the current version of OS X.
  • Made some changes to try to work around certain kinds of errors from maladroit news servers.
  • Made some changes to improve how Thoth handles files without the usual Finder Info data when trying to open them (especially image files)
  • Added some new work-arounds for Navigation Services bugs.
  • If a download was created using a default save-to folder, and before the transfer begins the preference to use a default folder was turned off, a disk full error might be reported when attempting the download. The error of disabling the default folder is now properly detected when attempting the download and a directory not found error will be returned instead.
  • Fixed a bug that caused a drag to a folder alias to fail.
  • When the auto-display image window was first opened, the trash icon button was not set to on if the default was to trash images. When the window was reused to show the next image the button would be set correctly. Fixed.
  • Fixed the bug that prevented "scroll to here" style scrolling from working in OS X with scrolling lists.
  • Fixed a bug that kept yEncode from being remembered as the default news encoding method in a personality.
  • Fixed a bug that kept the files associated with inline images from being trashed when they should have been when the reuse article window option was enabled.

Am about to finally upgrade to Leopard and a new Intel Mac, so I'm really glad to hear that my favorite newsreader has a version updated for that system. I really appreciate the continued updates.

...saw I bought this in early 2002 for $25.00.

Regardless, Brian has been supporting this application for more years than than and I've had use of the best Mac newsreader for more than 7 years for only $25. I just sent him another $25 because Thoth is worth it, and maybe 1.9 will appear for real. I understand burnout... rather than criticism, I'd rather pass on encouragement.

Thoth ReviewNot much progress... - Version: 1.8.4, 5/31/2009 08:31PM PST

... since the developer first released Thoth 1.8.4 more than a year ago. That's right, not even a point upgrade in more than a year. And still no Universal Binary.
I'm a registered user who used to recommend Thoth, but the developer doesn't seem to care about it any more. So paying for this app at this time just doesn't strike me as a smart use of funds.
The freeware MT-Newswatcher is almost as good as Thoth, and the shareware app Unison has left it in the dust.
