Symantec Norton Internet Security ReviewWhats the point of this then? - Version: 3.0, 2/18/2007 04:22AM PST

I spent £80 on NIS 3.0. Whenever I start up the computer it displays a whole list of error messages. Due to bad compatibily with OSX 10.4, even though this is the latest version of NIS!!!
Apart from an Antivirus the package doesn't seem to do anything that OSX doesn't do itself with its own built in firewall, and sharing protection.
I've also been told by many people including staff at the local Apple resellers that MAC's don't get viruses anyway, so there's no point spending hard earned cash on this product.
Waste of time and money!

Symantec Norton Internet Security ReviewJust ditch it - Version: 3.0, 2/3/2007 08:44PM PST

I originally bought Norton Systemworks 3.0 and somewhere between Pather and Tiger I started getting more errors than help from it. Last April I thought I'd fix it by buying NIS. Oh have I been sorry. No more protection and three times the error messages everytime I start up. Not to mention I couldn't use the Mac's built-in firewall because regardless of whether the Norton Personal Firewall was enabled it was still telling the system there was another firewall running.

As others have commented, the Uninstall app on the CD from Symantec does nothing but produce a long string of 'Unknown Error' messages (this seems to be the company's specialty). So I restarted my powerbook in target mode and, using my wife's iBook I systematically trashed every app, extension, shortcut and even web page that spotlighted 'symantec', 'norton', 'npf'.

Then I restarted and for the first time in 8 months I got to turn on the native firewall on my Mac. I feel so much better. I'm not even going to try to get money back from Symantec. Just please don't ever give them any of yours.

Oh, and I used to use a great firewall product in OS 9 called Doorstop. I hear they're still good so I'm going to check them out.

So, I decided it was time to update the virus defs. Signed on. The site suggested I "upgrade" to NIS 3.0, which now I think I actually had done years ago, but what the hell, I spent the 40 bucks to "upgrade." I now see, however, that the suite doesn't work with any new version of OSX. Further, my NAV def subscription wasn't renewed anyway, and STILL says it's expired. I can't get to support on the website without their page crashing. I'm astonished they can stay in business. I long since abandoned them on my Windows boxes, and now I plan to just tell myself that I spent 40 bucks smartening myself up on the Mac side. As soon as I post this, I will rid my computer and my life of this fraudulent company's garbage once and for all, and be glad it only cost me 40 clams and not my whole life's worth of data.

Symantec Norton Internet Security CommentaryNot fully compatible w/OS X10.4.4 - Version: 3.0, 2/1/2006 04:11PM PST

I''ve had NIS 3.0 for about 2 weeks, and can attest that it is not fully compatible with OS 10.4.4. On restart, I get 3 error messages re NIS: 1. "Unable to load Norton Privacy Control Ext. Reinstall and restart" . 2. "Norton Personal Firewall Error - Could not launch kernel extension; Firewall will work, but some features don't work". 3. Norton Antivirus error - Autoprotect could not continue." I haven't really put NIS 3.0 thru its paces, but it is obvious it's not doing a whole lot for me. On initial installation, NIS produced a note that it detected a new version of OS X (meaning my 10.4.4), thus might be incompatible, or something to that effect. I've noticed that as the reviews progress in time thru OS 10.1 to 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4, they get increasingly negative. Apparently, NIS 3.0 is compatible with 10.1 and 10.2, less so for 10.3, and mostly useless for 10.4. I am going to try to get my money back, it is not for my computer, just a piece of expensive trash. Perhaps someday Symantec will come out with a new version or upgrade compatible with 10.3 & 10.4, but for now, it's not for me.

Symantec Norton Internet Security ReviewParental Control Hyped - Doesn't Work with Panther - Version: 3.0, 11/27/2005 03:08PM PST

mikedelisle_dotmac
The parental control ceased working with Panther (10.3.9). I am not sure which version update or security update started the problem, but Symantec is still not able to find a solution. I have been working with them support since June and it is now almost December. Anyone find a fix?

Norton put me more in trouble than it resolved any problem to me.
When I tried to reach their support, it NEVER replied.
Then they're a lying bastards about security on OS-X.
What this keynote of them ordered by Mr Allen and Mr Gates.
For whom do those guys roll ?

Does not wk w/Panther nor w/Tiger and good luck getting it off ur Mac since Symantecs own uninstaller does not work, which they tell you to use on their own web site. I've used their products for 15yrs, but their quality has continued to diminish year after year. What an absolute waste of time and money, I had to remove every piece of the software manually...grrr

In Spain software companies are complaining a lot about ilegal software, and if what they are saying it true, then we are one of the very few companies that only has legal software. When at the same time you see the service that Symantec is giving to their clients, one starts to ask whether companies, like Symantec deserve our support.

I depend on this app to filter internet sites for my young teenager. I looked on the Symantec website before installing Tiger, and there was nothing about it being incompatible with Tiger. But, it is incompatible. I am very disappointed and I have a big mess trying to uninstall Tiger and re-install Panther on his computer. Symantec obviously does not care enough about its customers to provide them with important information.

Symantec Norton Internet Security Troubleshooting ReportUninstall NIS 3 before you install Tiger ! - Version: 3.0, 5/5/2005 10:35AM PST

they're not compatible. I emailed Symantec and got a reply from their India tech support that "they're working on it and will post it on their website" whenever they get an update for Tiger. I tried Firewall and Anti-virus separately to see if it was one or the other that caused the problems (freezes, popups saying the NIS wasn't working and I'd need to uninstall and reinstall) - and found that both caused the same problems. I'd tried the uninstall and reinstall and it made no difference. The only thing that made Tiger run smoothly was uninstalling the whole NIS package. That's just pitiful that an important app like this hasn't already got an update ready.
